Finding your Limits

We have 5 potential candidates for this fall’s Dan Test, 3 for 3rd Dan, 1 for 2nd Dan, and 1 for 1st Dan.  An important part of their journey toward their test needs to include “finding their limits”.  That does not necessarily mean how high they can jump or how many they can do of any technique.  It means pushing themselves in both strong areas and of weak areas in their training.  Many of those areas include mental training.  A good example is dealing with an injury.  I know many who have quit training because of a lasting injury.  Soo Bahk Do is not limited to only those who are in good shape and athletic.  The test is finding a reasonable way to deal with the injury.  It’s foolish to aggravate an injury, but wise to deal with it.

This summer offers a good opportunity for all of you to push yourself and really work at what you are both good at and need work on.  We are all students in Soo Bahk Do.  Pick a few areas you want to excel in and areas you feel you need to work on and take it to the limit!

Mu Shim by Beth Warren, 2nd Gup

Mu Shim is an extremely important instrument in many aspects of life.  The idea of Mu Shim is to let go of everything – all the cares and worries present during the day, all tasks, “to-do’s,” mistakes made, etc – to clear your head of clutter, to liberate your mind.  The ability to empty one’s mind is helpful in calming, sorting, centering, and becoming efficient and effective.  By freeing yourself of everything that has been weighing on your mind, you allow yourself to re-grip, focus on what is happening in the present, and let things flow more easily.  You are able to handle things better, more efficiently and effectively when nothing is getting in your way, when you are not distracted.  By removing these distractions, you are able to focus all of your energy on one thing.  In training that means that you will be able to focus on the task at hand, put all your effort into learning and performing the art well, and it will allow what you have already learned, to flow naturally, freely into your techniques.  While sparring, an empty mind allows you to be lighter on your feet, to anticipate what your opponent will do next, to react quickly and effectively, and to be present in the moment, which will allow you to trust your body and mind to guide you to the desired end result.  Mu Shim is also a wonderful technique to practice in everyday life.  Meditating and clearing your mind during a busy, stressful day provides a sense of renewal and allows you to rejuvenate and focus in on the task at hand.
