The martial art of Soo Bahk Do is relatively modern. However, its basis, the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, dates back many centuries. Soo Bahk Do is a composite style, being 60% Korean Soo Bahk Ki, 30% Northern Chinese and 10% Southern Chinese. Our kicking techniques, for which Soo Bahk Do is unsurpassed, are based on Soo Bahk Ki (technique). Soo Bahk Ki was first developed during the Silla Dynasty (618-935 A.D.), but enjoyed its flowering during the Koryo Dynasty (935-1392 A.D.).
Soo Bahk Do is both a hard and soft style, deriving its hardness in part from Soo Bahk Ki and its soft flowing movements from the Northern Chinese systems.
The person who developed Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, Grandmaster Hwang Kee, was a martial arts prodigy, having mastered Tae Kyun (another Korean system not related to Tae Kwon Do) and Soo Bahk at the age of 22. At that time (1936), he traveled to Northern China. There he encountered a Chinese variation of martial artistry called the Tang Method. From 1936 to 1945 he combined Soo Bahk Do with the Tang Method and developed what was to become known as Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. Grandmaster Hwang Kee passed away in 2002 and his son, H.C. Hwang received worldwide support in becoming the next Grandmaster.
Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan (a brotherhood and school of stopping inner and outer conflict and developing virtue according to the way of the worthy hand) is not a sport. Though it is not essentially competitive, it has great combat applications. It is a classical martial art, and its purpose is to develop every aspect of the self, in order to create a mature person who totally integrates his/her intellect, body, emotions, and spirit. This total integration helps to create a person who is free from inner conflict and who can deal with the outside world in a mature, intelligent, forthright, and virtuous manner.
Soo Bahk Do, in the United States, is guided by the Grandmaster through a Federation. The Federation is governed through an elected Board of Directors, run by volunteer members, devoted to the growth and continuation of Soo Bahk Do in the United States, and to the maintenance of standards of excellence set by the founder, Grandmaster Hwang Kee. All instructors are internationally certified by Grandmaster H.C Hwang. Testing of students or groups occurs every three-six months and test results are sent to the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey, where they are processed and registered.
You are fortunate enough to be located within Region 7, which offers tournament competition and informational clinics twice a year. These gatherings promote a strong family atmosphere and an enjoyable learning experience for all that attend. Our Region 7 Soo Bahk Do family consists of over 100 active Dan members and 300-400 active Gup members. With so many quality people, we are definitely one of the strongest regions in the United States.
The purpose of training in Soo Bahk Do should be the enhancement of the mental and physical self. It is good to have great hope and expectations when you start, but do not be overly ambitious. If you think you will be good after two or three months, you will be disappointed before the end of the first month. It is not reasonable to expect more than you can reasonably achieve. Try to pass through the first gate of training with an open mind.
