Milwaukee Junction

A local model railroad club I belong to (just happens to be an HO club) has several railroad crossings. I volunteered to scratch build them. This photo is of the finished product. Following are views illustrating my work. The ties are made from styrene. The rail is code 83

This view is the original track work as I found it when I joined the club. The members installed this makeshift crossing intending to eventually replace it. Maybe they were waiting for me? As you can see there are several flaws with the crossing. Hard for rolling stock to cross the main line.

I traced the track onto a sheet of paper and built the new crossings directly on the tracing. I laid out the ties based on photos of the prototype.

This close up shows the ties in more detail. Ties were made from styrene, scraped with a razor saw for that wood grain look. Tie plate with bolts were removed from ties on commercial flex track and glued in place on the styrene ties.

The crossing is complete. Because the four diamonds were so close together I built them as one assembly.

Here is a closer view of the finished product. Next step is to install on the layout, weather and scenic the area.

A Grand Trunk local freight train passes over Milwaukee Junction

The finished crossings installed on the layout. Milwaukee Junction is located on the Grand Truck Western in Detroit, Michigan.

The club, The South Oakland County Model Railroad Club models the Grand Truck from Detroit to Durand, Michigan.
