Phonological Awareness -
Hearing the Sounds

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and play with the sounds that make up our language.  The ability to play with sounds, phonological awareness, includes rhyming, alliteration, and segmenting words into syllables.  Poetry, nursery rhymes, Rhythmic activities and tongue twisters help preschool children play with sound.

Phonics involves connecting print (letters) with sounds.   Phonemic Awareness is more highly related to reading than are tests of general intelligence. (Stanovich, 1996)
