Using Language as a Tool to Further Thinking, Exploration, and Growth
for Children, Staff and Families

Contents and highlights of
1998 NAEYC Conference Session
Toronto, Ontario
Presenters Mary Lu Love and Su Theriault

The purpose of this web site is two-fold, first to provide information and resources for those interested in expanding their communication skills, and second to provide an introduction to the NAEYCSeminar session "Using Language as a Tool to Further Thinking, Exploration, and Growth for Children, Staff and Families."  We hope all visitors will explore the content and find useful information.Throughout this site we refer to techniques for talking with children.  In our experience, these strategies are easily transferable and work well with staff and families.  Try them and see!

We welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions. Please use the e-mail links at the bottom of each page.

The seminar uses hands-on activities, role play, large and small group discussion to explore how questions effect behavior, self esteem and learning.

Participants:

· identify the characteristics of effective questions and learn to recognize when they are being used
· develop strategies to practice the formation of questions that help children develop their ability to apply the scientific method
· discuss the advantages of  "not always answering children's questions."
This seminar is most applicable for teachers of preschool and school-age children (with some applicability for toddlers) and for early care and education professionals who interact with staff and families.
