Copper Canyon, Mexico - Oct. 2006
The plan was to fly to Mazatlan, rent some dual-sport motorcycles and ride north through the twisty and scenic Sierra Madre Occidental Range into the Copper Canyon area for further exploring. There was a Horizon's Unlimited rally scheduled for October 10-13 in Creel which is the "Gateway to Copper Canyon" and it's a good jumping off point for local exploring. Oscar Calderon (e-mail), who owns a small motorcycle tour company called "Mexico Motorcycle Adventures", had two BMW F 650GS's and a Suzuki DR650 available. We found Oscar to be very accommodating, for about the same price as renting we agreed to let him guide the first part of the tour. His local knowledge of routes, restaurants, hotels and sights proved to be quite valuable. Plus, he was a fun guy to get to know and ride with.
