Suzy Chaffee

Suzy received her first world headlines, as America’s top downhiller at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics. Having been a ballerina as a child, she had fantasies of dancing down mountains, and later invented ski ballet and became a 3 X World Freestyle Champion. Introducing it to America on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, she raised $1 million to start a national women’s division. She is uniquely in the Ski Hall of Fame for being a Champion of Alpine, Freestyle and Sport Builder.
Suzy starred in Willy Bogner’s "Fire & Ice," the biggest box office ski film hit worldwide-- third in Germany. She also produced, directed, and starred in the first ski ballet film –"Butch Chapstick and the Snowdance Kid," that Baryshnikov called "fun, imaginative with lovely lines." As a social activist, Suzy led the Washington March for Title 1X — Equal Opportunity for Women in School Sports, set up the first meeting at the White House to get it enforced, and convinced Ted Kennedy, Senate Health Leader, to champion it for 25 years.
The former 5’9"model not only captained an Olympic team, but was the first woman to serve on the board of the US Olympic Committee, as well as the President’s Council on Fitness for four Presidents. While skiing and working with President Ford on a bill to streamline Olympic Sports in America, his ad man Jim Jordan, was so inspired with Chaffee’s idealism, that he dreamed up the "Suzy Chapstick" lip balm commercial.
