Amber grew up with a superhero background. Her father, known simply as Dr. Parallax, spent several years as a relatively well-known superhero in Martian Nueva America. He was the mastermind behind the defeat of Neil Quercus' first attack on Martian Nueva America in 3980, and after his retirement in 3985 he has spent many years speaking at the annual M.N.A. Superhero Convention. His seminar on "Choosing a Physically Attractive Uniform" is always a popular one. The 4000 convention was special to him for two reasons: he led the successful project to ensure that the M.N.A. Convention Center would be Y4K compliant, and it would be the first convention that his daughter Amber would attend. At age 15, Amber is one of the youngest conference attendees, and the youngest member of the Unlikely Heroes.

Amber was not born with super powers. In fact, the most notable thing she was born with was an unattractively large nose. Dr. Parallax saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, and he got one of his superhero computer whiz friends to build Amber an electronic nose job. At age 12, with the help of a superhero plastic surgeon, Amber was fitted with an electronic nose that gave her a superior sense of smell. She can detect smells miles away, better than any animal in the known universe. It may not be the best super power, but Dr. Parallax has always remained confident that his daughter would find a way to use it. It did not, however, make her face any more attractive as her father had hoped.

Amber recently spent a month on the planet Argus as a short-term foreign exchange student. While there, she met Arga Reversa , a college student volunteering with the exchange program who also had an interesting super power. Arg came out to visit Amber on M.N.A., where they decided to attend the Superhero Convention as a twosome searching for other members of a potential superhero team. They quickly found those other members when they met Furnitron and the Goat. After Amber introduced her boyfriend Colin to the other Unlikely Heroes, their reactions brought about disunity that threatens the group's very existence.
