Joey Lightspeed grew up on a cul-de-sac in the affluent suburban area of Martian Nueva America, a self-contained colony in orbit around Mars. As a child, he always dreamed of being a hero, saving the universe and fighting evil with some sort of super powers. His parents, however discouraged his aspirations for being a superhero and pushed him toward sports. He eventually found himself a quite capable basketball player, but the dreams of being a superhero continued.

One day, while playing basketball with neighborhood playmate Kevin Quasar, he suddenly and unexpectedly changed his bodily form into that of a chair. Needless to say, although Joey was glad to finally have a super power, he was a bit disappointed that his power was so unglamorous. Nevertheless, when a street thief stole one of Joey's prized posessions, his super power helped him and Kevin stop the thief.

Joey's first superhero experience inspired him and Kevin, who had also recently discovered a super power, to attend a superhero convention and learn to use their powers for good. While at the convention, they met two girls, Amber and Arg, who were interested in forming a superhero foursome to fight evil full-time. The newly formed foursome got their first test soon enough, at the hands of no less of a threat than the deadly Neil Quercus and his Earth Raiders.
