| 72 | Ch3: Black-crowned Night-Heron: Population Status: 2nd par: 1st sentence | The statement is an err that Gabrielson and Jewett (1940) also made. Finley (1906) talks about two colonies in his article, one near Portland, Oregon, and one near San Francisco, California. The Portland, Oregon, colony had 200 Great Blue Heron nests. It is the San Francisco colony that included numerous Black-crowned Night-Heron nests; none are mentioned for Oregon. Replace the sentence with Gabrielson and Jewett (1940) mention a colony with 200 nests near Portland, citing Finley (1906), but this was an error. A careful read of Finley (1906) reveals that the colony of 200 near Portland consisted exclusively of Great Blue Herons; a colony near San Francisco, abundantly described in the article, contained many Black-crowned Night-Herons. Nevertheless, during the spring of 1951, H. Nehls (p.c.) found four pairs of night-herons nesting in the Ross I. Great Blue Heron colony in Portland. It is possible that a few pairs still nest there or at the large colony on Bachelor I. in Ridgefield NWR, sw. Washington (H. Nehls p.c.). | F | 2003/06/25 | HBN |
