Born in Los Angeles, California, I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area but headed back down south to earn a bachelors of arts degree in English from UC Santa Barbara. I was a college freshman when I fell in love with my future husband, and it was while studying English literature and history that I also fell in love with 18 th century and Regency England, topics I never tire writing about and researching. In an effort to gain practical job skills I enrolled in the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley and earned a masters degree. That led to jobs as staff writer and free-lancer for several newspapers and magazines.

As a reporter I got a chance to cover many different types of stories, from fairly dull city council and school board meetings to court trials and even a sensational murder. It was excellent preparation for creating fictional characters! Some of the publications my articles appeared in are the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner, The Oregonian, Learning Magazine, Change, Darkroom Photography and Monterey Life. I also did a brief stint as restaurant reviewer, for a newspaper and a guidebook.

In addition to writing and reading, I enjoy prowling through used bookstores, crocheting, watching funny and/or romantic films, whether old or new, gardening, and teaching myself how to play our 1912 upright piano. I also look forward to traveling with my husband Tom, taking our Sheltie dog Toby with us when we can. We have two grown sons, one still in college and the other in the throes of law school. Though they live away from home, the boys still return occasionally for a good meal and to do their laundry, adding a welcome flurry of activity to the household and delighting our two family cats.
