Dog Poems

"You think dogs will not be in heaven?
I tell you, they will be there long before any of us."
~ Robert Louis Stevenson ~

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.  When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.  There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.  The animals are happy and content except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.  His bright eyes are intent, his eager body quivers.  Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.  The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head; and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

DOG (Spelled Backward)

When God had made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees.
He then made all the animals,
The fish, the birds and bees.
And when at last He'd finished,
Not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine,
And give each one a name."
And so He traveled far and wide
And everywhere He went,
A little creature followed Him
Until its strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me."
Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
And called you dog, my friend."

FRIENDS FOREVER MORE

An old man wandered aimlessly, on a cold and rainy day.
He wished for friends and family, but all had passed away.
He thought he saw a movement from the corner of his eye.
An old shivering dog lay curled beneath the leaden sky.

The old man whistled for the dog, the sad sight made him weep.
Now if it follows me, he thought, this old dog I shall keep.
The old dog raised his shaggy head, with a longing in his eyes.
His tail was wagging slowly, as the old dog tried to rise.

Now the two became the best of friends, they were happy and content.
Until the old man knew one day, his time was nearly spent.
In his bed the old man lay, his heart was full of fear.
For the one that he would leave behind, the old dog that he held so dear.

But the angels came for both of them, that night as they both slept.
For the angels could not part them, so together they were kept.
They rose on wings together, up to heaven did they soar.
The old man and the shaggy dog, friends...forever more.

OLD DOG IN A LOCKET

Old dog in a locket that lies next to my heart
I will always love you as I did right from the start
You were right beside me through the darkest of my days
It was your kind and gentle nature that made me want to stay.

Now I hold you in my arms, your breath still warm against my hand
Our hearts still beat together and I wonder if you understand
Through the hours that I held you before the light did leave your soul
I knew a way to keep you forever in my hold.

I snipped the hair from around your eyes so I would always see
The beauty that surrounds me even in times of need.
I snipped the hair from around your ears so I would always hear
Music in the distance to quiet any fears.

I snipped the hair from across your back
To bring me strength in times of need
And the power of your essence would always be with me.
I snipped the hair from around your heart that beats in time with mine
So I would know that love would find me at some distant time.

And so your life slipped out of mine on a quiet, spring-like day
But I knew that part of you was always here to stay.
Old dog in a locket that lays next to my heart
I will always love you even though we had to part.

DON'T GRIEVE TOO LONG

Don't grieve too long for now I'm free
I've followed the path God set for me
I ran to Him when I heard His call
I swished my tail and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To bark, to love, to romp or play
Games left unplayed must stay that way
I found such peace, it made my day.

My parting has left you with a void
Please fill it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss
Oh yes, these things I too shall miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full, you've given so much
Your time, your love and gentle touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your head and share with me
God wanted me, He set me free!
