SONGS

Across The JordanGoing across the Jordan was code for slaves in the antebellum south of the USA. It meant escaping to freedom. The song is about the freedom from sin that comes with the Kingdom of God. The song can also be used as a requiem.

The Cedars of Lebanon Psalm 29 was the inspiration for this hymn, though Isaiah 49:15-16 was blended in. It's useful both for Lent and during Ordinary Time as a Preparation Rite or Communion song. The basic theme is that God's love is constant and sure.

HosannaThis was written for the Palm Sunday Procession. This is the only song with the chords written specifically with the piano in mind. For guitarists, capo 3 and play it in D. The reference for the refrain, Luke 19:38-40, is my favorite description of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.

In This Desert Land This song, based on Is 35:6, was written for Lent but can be used for Ordinary time. It is quiet and meditative but not somber. It points to the joy of the coming of the Lord.

I Trust In You This song uses Psalm 31 to express the conviction that God will redeem us. It is a Lenten song that is filled with hope and like all psalms that express some fear it ends on a note of hopeful expectation.

Prayer For Guidance This song is a combination of Psalms 25 and 27. I wrote it for Lent to sound somewhat like a chant. It can be used during Ordinary time as well.

The Water of Life This song was written for a baptism. The refrain comes from Revelation 22:1 which, in turn, echoes a passage from Ezekial 47. The rhythm should be light and fast to emphasize the joy of the song.

Within Your Care Part of the inspiration for this song comes from the Mariner's Prayer, "O, Lord my boat is so small and the sea so large.." Only Jesus could calm the waters for His disciples who called on Him in their time of need. So we, too, can call on Jesus in our times of need and know He will be there.
