Full U.S. Map
The south central states are comprised of many different land forms, and
provide a wonderful variety of opportunities for canoeists. The desert southwest
encroaches on west Texas, and the Rio Grande gives canoe campers a chance to experience
the spectacular scenery and border culture up close and personal. The rolling
prairies of the Great Plains are not so dry, and they have several good rivers for
extended trips, including the Red and Brazos Rivers. The low lands of the Gulf coast
region of Texas and Louisiana abound with canoe streams, of which we have selected a few
of the best for long trips. And finally, Arkansas, gateway to the great American
oak-hickory forest region and the Ozarks has many great canoe streams, of which the
Buffalo is deservedly the most popular and famous. The eastern edge of Oklahoma has
some of these same qualities and several good rivers for floating. Only the higher
plains of west Texas and Oklahoma lack good floatable rivers.
