For a number of years the Dallas Sierra Club has sponsored a canoe trip over the week end nearest Bastille Day (July 14), the French holiday that celebrates the birth of the modern French Republic (1789). This has traditionally been held on the Red River, and the turnout is usually quite large. Everyone brings something French and a prize is sometimes awarded to the person with the most popular French item. A few French songs are butchered by the mono-lingual paddlers, usually including the French national anthem ("La Marseillaise").
