                                       Weekly Radio Nets and Frequencies

 

Our official repeater K8WNJ 146.820 (neg offset) PL 94.8 located in eastern Muskegon County, Michigan. This is an open repeater and all hams are welcome. This is the primary repeater used by ARES, RACES and SKYWARN during activation, drills and weekly net. Our weekly net is currently being restructured to better service the community. Weekly nets are held on Sunday night at 7:30 P.M.

 

ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service)

sponsored by ARRL.

 

           ARES members volunteer to assist local and public service agencies during emergencies and public service events. Any licensed Amateur Radio operator is eligible for membership.

 

From the ARRL website :

 

           " The Amateur Radio Emergency Service ( ARES ) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible for membership in ARES. The only qualification, other than possession of an Amateur Radio License, is the desire to serve. Because ARES is an amateur service, only amateur are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership. " 

 

RACES ( Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service )

sponsored by Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency

 

RACES is an organization of amateur radio operators who volunteer to provide radio communications for State and Local governments in time of emergencies.  RACES is a special part of amateur operation sponsored by FEMA and DHS. RACES provides emergency communications for civil preparedness only.  Races is conducted by amateurs using their primary station licenses or by existing RACES stations, In the event that the President invokes the War Emergency Power Act, amateurs officially enrolled in the local civil preparedness group would become limited to certain frequencies, while all other normal amateur operations would be silenced.

 

Races provide or supplements communications during emergencies where normal communication systems have sustained damage. It may be used in a wide variety of situations, including Natural Disasters; Technological Disasters; Terrorist Incidents; and Bomb Threats

 

Muskegon County RACES members are required to complete FEMA courses IS-2 or IS-22, IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800 to be RACES certified as well as pass required background check.
