Illustrators research their subjects, sketch ideas, and empathize with the characters that they portray. In a 25-minute slide show I present my creative process from reading the author's manuscript to creating the final art.
Presentations are tailored to the grade level of the audience. Programs can be customized to focus on a range of subjects including: pioneers (A Book for Black-eyed Susan, Little House books), Pilgrims (Pilgrim Cat), Abraham Lincoln (Abe Lincoln Loved Animals), the state of New Jersey (G is for Garden State), and bullying (The Orange Shoes). An interactive drawing demonstration is part of every 45-minute program.
“…You provided our pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students with three separate presentations focusing on several of your beautifully illustrated books. …Inviting the children to doodle while you spoke was exciting and made for a thought –provoking experience. Our students were captivated with your soothing voice, calming nature and caring personality. Working with you was a pleasure; your flexibility and effective means of communication were greatly appreciated.”

“From parent to teachers, administrators to students, everyone was raving about how captivating and inspiring your presentations were. The books and your accompanying illustrations were moving, with levels of interest for everyone! ...Any event that ends with students asking for books so eagerly is a success to me. ”

Hands-On Projects for Groups of 15-30 Students
Little House
This project for younger grades begins with a reading of A Little House Birthday or Sugar Snow. I draw a large figure of Laura and her dog Jack. The children draw, color, and cut out their contributions. After we glue them on, the students draw and color directly on the mural.
Port Colden School, Washington, New Jersey
G is for Garden State
This project works especially well with NJ fourth graders who are studying the state. The mural can be about the entire state or students in each class can pick out a theme from the book, like the Boardwalk, Lenni Lenape, Trenton, Inventions, etc.
Trenton
Boardwalk - Tinc Road School, Flanders, New Jersey
Pilgrim Cat
I draw a cross-section of the Mayflower moored off shore from Plymouth. Children draw Pilgrims, Native Americans, houses, supplies, and, of course, cats and mice. The figures and other elements are colored, cut out, and glued to the mural.
