Born in Staten Island, New York, Doris graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and received an MFA from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
Doris collaborated on the Little House program for HarperCollins,
Doris and her husband, Michael McFadden, - artist, teacher and fine craftsman - live in a 150-year-old grist mill on the banks of the Musconetcong River in Warren County, New Jersey, where they raised their children, Ivy and Benjamin. Doris spends her day working in her studio and walking their little black dog, Bruce Wayne, who appears in The Orange Shoes.
In addition to teaching art classes at the Mill, Doris visits schools where she presents her work and demonstrates her drawing technique to students.
