DRILL # 6

Putting away a volley

Your goal in hitting a volley should be to make it the final shot of a rally.  If you are on the baseline hitting to somebody at the net make sure you keep the ball low. This is a doubles drill to designed to improve both baseline and net play.

  • Two players start on the baseline on the same side of the court and two players are at the net on the other side.

  • One of the baseline players puts the ball in play with a groundstroke down the middle.

  • One of the net players volleys. If the ball is struck above the level of the net, put it away. Angle the ball away or hit a hard volley. In either event end the point
  • If the volleyer strikes the ball below net level, volley it deep into the court and wait for the next shot.
  • The baseline players should attempt to hit balls low to the volleyers feet so that the ball is volleyed up. This is more important than pace.  Also play most balls down the middle.
  • If the volleyer pops the ball up and you get to move in and hit a ground stroke from inside the baseline, drive it hard.  Now is the time to hit a sharp angle or down the line

  • This is a fast drill so keep your feet moving and concentrate. If you dont, its easy to get hit
  • Switch after a while
