DOVE'S SHIPPING NEWS

FALL 2007

December 1, 2007

The good news is we have an indoor location, ...

LOCATION
We will be using the Leslie Park Golf Course Clubhouse. This is on Traver Rd, which can be accessed from Barton Dr between Pontiac and Plymouth, or near the intersection of Plymouth and Maiden Lane at the base of Pontiac, near a certain restaurant of some repute. A nifty map is attached.

FEES
Fees for winter training will be $110 for the full three months, and are now payable to Pioneer Rowing Club. There will be a drop box at the clubhouse for collection. Let's say they're due by FRIDAY, Dec 7. For anyone starting up after that they’ll be due when you show up the first time.

SCHEDULE
Because we’re limited to just 11 ergs (and despite my best efforts to entice the other clubs to join in), we will have to run designated shifts of rowers. The first week will probably be spent sorting out the numbers, so please be patient as we juggle this, but preliminarily we will attend thus:

Nv-JV Girls: M, W 4-5pm, Sa 12-1pm
VR-JV Girls: M, W 5-6pm, Sa 10-11am
Nv-JV Boys: Tu, Th 4-5pm, Sa 1-2pm
VR-JV Boys: Tu, TH 5-6pm, Sa 11-12pm
Fridays will be relay races open to all, 4-5:30

I think this works out to about $3.00 per session. Commit or find yourself wondering why you are being beat by crews that have committed to winning over the winter.

I have seen most of you working out at some point over the past month. If I have not seen you, you have no excuse now. If you don't want to commit, I will find someone who does!

Pioneer's Take On Water

But Still Afloat

Wyandotte, MI. - The Wyandotte Boat Club hosted the American Heritage River Fall Classic Regatta on Sunday November 4, 2007 under clear crisp skies and light wind.   This is the last race of the fall racing season for most of the 24 Teams represented.   The Pioneer's entered 10 events and came home with 8 medals.   Gold Medals were awarded to the Women's Junior Novice 8, Women's Junior 4 and the Women's Lightweight 8.   Silver Medals went to the Men's Junior Novice 8. Women's Junior 8 and the Men's Junior 4.   Bronze Medals went to the Women's Junior 4 B boat and Men's Junior 8 B boat.

The final Team standing were:

1 st        Detroit Boat Club

2 nd       Huron Crew

3 rd        Pioneer Crew

The biggest question mark about this fall is are they mentally and physically prepared to defend their State Title status?   The Fall Season is a time for rowers and coaches to regenerate.   Coaches work on technical changes, play with lineups, and try and get their teams ready for the spring push where the real racing starts.   The coach can usually deal with the ups and downs because they are looking for that mental and physical tenacity that will carry the team through the long winter and into the spring.

*** Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta ***

FOURTH?   FOURTH?   FOURTH!

Columbus, Ohio - A devastating storm looked as though it loomed on the horizon as we approached the Columbus area.   The storm was averted and the city was spared; yet the damage inflicted on the Pioneer Crew left them devastated.   With only two medals to show for ten events entered the Pioneers were left shaking their heads and asking what went wrong.   Character is often revealed in situations like this.   You can give up or you can analyze what needs to be done and go about fixing it.   Fixing it means hard work and dedication to the task, keeping the focus on team unity and individual development.   Sometimes this means sacrificing something else to achieve your stated goal.   Constantly reminding yourself that the season is a marathon and not a sprint.   We are only in the first third of the marathon and jockeying to put ourselves in position for that final push to the line.   You obviously don't want to put yourself in a huge hole a try to make it up in the final sprint because you just won't be able to find those reserves unless you have been making those deposits in the bank.

The racing at the Speakmon was by far the best test of the fall season.   The top Junior Clubs from the Midwest attended the event and gave the High Schools a wake up call.   For many being the top high school is good enough and for others it just means more hard work and sacrifice.   The journey is the reward and the outcome is just a consequence.   The Pioneers are by no means done in by the experience.   It is just a wake up call to the urgency that everyday is a test.   We are still sitting in a position one of the top high schools in the region and just a notch behind some of the more prestigious Junior programs.   No excuses for our performances just accept it and move on.

The bright spots of day belonged to the Novice Men's 8 coming in third in their event and making continued progress toward speed.   The other great performance was by the Women's Lightweight 4 with a just a total domination of that event.   The margin of victory was one minute and thirsty seconds over the closest rivals.   Comparing their time against the open Varsity High School fours was just as impressive.   The margin to the winner in that event was thirty seconds.

PIO CREW TIMES FALL

Westerville, Ohio - The Pioneer Crew competed in the Columbus Fall Classic on Saturday, October 13, 2007 facing stiff competition from many programs in the Ohio and Michigan region.   The day started with cool temperatures and morning fog, but after a short delay racing began with Pioneer Women's Junior Varsity rowers taking to the water and starting the day off on the right note. The Pioneers came in 1 st and 6 th giving the team an instant lift.   The conditions worked out great with sunny skies and light winds allowing the team to get a good indication on times needed to be successful. The racing finally concluded around 5pm and the Pioneer Crew packed up their boats and medals for the long trip back to Michigan.

The Pioneer Crew entered 14 events and came away with 9 medals.   The Gold Medals went to the Women's Junior Varsity 8, Women's Varsity 8 and the Mixed Junior Varsity 8.   Silver Medals went to the Men's Junior Novice 8, Women's Junior Lightweight 4, and the Mixed Junior Novice 8.   The Bonze Medal went to the Women's Junior Lightweight 8, Women's Varsity 4 and the Men's Junior Varsity 8.

Dove's Shipping News                      Fall 2007         Number 28a,October 10, 2007

Wednesday October 10, 2007 - We a couple of days away from the Columbus Fall Classic in Westerville, Ohio and we are by far the sickist Team I have ever been associated with. We will see what kind of depth we have and what kind of character we are made of. The crews I have been developing since the regatta with Saline and Huron have been shot to pieces and we will go into this regatta with rowers that have not practiced together in boats. I made up new line-ups Tuesday and have decided not to practice the rest of the week. We will just race what we have and evaluate later.

*** Horton Basket Belongs to Pioneer ***

Ford Lake, Michigan - The Pioneer Crew began it's fall campaign with the Horton Regatta on Ford Lake against Washtenaw County rivals Saline and Huron Saturday under sunny skies and calm winds.   Saline hosted the regatta and provided an excellent venue to row a 4000 meter course.   The racing started at 9:00 am and finished around noon.   The three area schools raced hard against each other in a friendly but intense atmosphere.

The Pioneer ultimately prevailed with more boats in top places.   The Pioneers won 4 of 8 events, while Huron dominated more of the Novice events.

The overall team winners were: Pioneer 4 wins, Huron 3 wins and Saline 1 win.

Dove's Shipping News                      Fall 2007         Number 27a, September 26, 2007

September 26, 2007 The fall season is in full swing and we are preparing for our first test against Saline and Huron on Ford Lake. The Team is 100 strong or is it 99 strong. We continue to have extaordinary numbers participating. The women's varsity/jv has 4 crews and the men's varsity/jv has 3 crews this season. We continue to try and juggle coaching and boat issues as we deal the all the rowers practicing at the same time.
