*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***
Sunday, June 15, 2008
Cincinnati, OH - The Ann Arbor Pioneer High School Womens Youth 4+ of Julia Darnton, Emily Smalligan, Jess Rampton, Inge Zwaanenburg and coxswain Colleen Macke raced in the Grand Final of the US Rowing Youth National Championship on Sunday, June 15, 2008 placing fifth in the event. The competition brought together the top 16 crews from around the country to race in the event. Each crew represents the top finishers in their region. The elimination process started on Friday with the top 3 finishers moving to the semis on Saturday. Once again the top 3 finishers would move on to the Grand Final while the rest would compete in the petite final. The Pioneers made it to the Grand Final. Proving that they are one of the top six crews in the nation. Their 5 th place finish solidified that fact.
The race itself started with the Pioneers moving out quickly to establish a slight lead in the first 500 meters. Peddie Prep School, Noble Prep School, Dayton Rowing Club and Newport Rowing Club began to move through the pack at the 1000 meter mark. The race slowly began to establish itself between Peddie and Noble, with Peddie pulling a lead at the 1500-meter mark. The Pioneer briefly made a move to establish 4 th place but lost ground in the last 500 meters. Noble made a huge push and rowed through Peddie and finally broke their two-year reign as champions of the Women's Youth 4+. The Pioneers made a gallant sprint but came up with the 5 th place finish.
This is the third year in a row that the Pioneers have had a boat in the Grand Finals at the National Championship. Getting this far at this level is a testament to the quality of rowing the Pioneer Crew has developed.

Assembling the Chicken Army:
First of all I must say, "I just don't know how to stop, but I will make another attempt at it again"
As I reflect back, I can remember at the beginning of year finding a passage about Aquarius's, of which I am one. It said, "There are still places in China where plagues of locusts periodically descend in biblical proportions. The farmers in the region fought back, by gathering an army of 10,000 chickens in anticipation of the invading hordes. The bird soldiers were trained for two months, and when the showdown came, they acquitted themselves admirably. It went on to say that this vignette is an apt metaphor for a challenge you'll face in the year ahead. It concluded by urging us to "assemble our own personal equivalent of a chicken army."
Well, my little ones. I did assemble my ARMY. I asked them to BELIEVE. I asked them to DREAM and I asked them to TRUST. And I told them the only constant in life is change. The only thing you can control is your attitude and your effort, because life is so short and you must try to leave your mark!
There are no guarantees. Life is a constant challenge and we must wake each day and face each challenge head on. Of course that is for me after a good cup of coffee.
The secret to success is found in consistency and the willingness to be flexible. A common goal is essential along with the leadership to see it through. You must also have people that recognize and accept their roles. We face challenges everyday. We face competition on a regular basis. Having a Plan is essential, and having a back up Plan is another essential, because some days we will win and other days we will lose. It is up to us to figure out what went wrong and how to go about changing it. Sometimes we need to slow down just to go fast. We need to let things happen and not force our needs above our goals.
Coaching is more than just winning. It is about observation, it is about motivation, it is about patience and it is about being human. It is the most satisfying job I have ever done in my life. Rowing is just a metaphor for life itself and as far as I am concerned. "I will be what I will be, and I am now what I am. "
The power we have given you will strengthen you and empower you to strive for greatness. It will make you grow and enrich your life. To every single rower I tell you, "Being satisfied with mediocrity is just not an option."
I would like to thank the parents of the rowers for allowing me to have a small part in your children's development. I would like to thank Rich for everything he does because you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with and he has made it possible for me to do what I do best. I don't think he has always agreed with what I do, but ultimately I believe he respects what we have achieved here. I would like to thank my Father, wherever he may be for helping be to strive to be a better man. And ultimately, I would like to thank my wife, Sugar for allowing me to do what I do. And of course for not publishing all those incriminating pictures.
I will leave you with these last comments:
Wanting and committing are two different things. I hope we have learned to make that COMMITMENT. I hope that because we have made that commitment we have learned to BELIEVE. I hope that because we believe we will DREAM. We will TRUST that because we have made these changes in our lives, the only option that can happen is SUCCESS.
Remember, that through hard work and perseverance we can stand tall and say we are WINNERS.
It is this journey that we will all remember, and it is this journey that has bound us together as a TEAM.
I have cherished every moment of this DREAM.
ROW HARD, ROW FAST AND GO PIONEER CREW!
Thank you,

Canadian National Championship
St. Catharines-Niagra, Ontario - The Ann Arbor Pioneer High School Crew competed in the 63 rd Annual Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championship over the weekend. The three-day event featured 128 Schools, 815 Entries and 2658 Athletes.
Overcast skies welcomed by rowers at the 63rd Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championship
Posted By GRANT LAFLECHESTANDARD STAFF
There wasn't anything terribly pleasant about the weekend weather. A menacing storm blew in Saturday, and for most of Sunday, dark clouds threatened the city with more rain.
But Ken Campbell, chairman of the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championship, thought the weather was perfect.
"This kind of cool, overcast weather is perfect for rowing," Campbell said while watching the final race of the three championships Sunday afternoon at Martindale Pond. "It keeps the athletes cool. They don't overheat, and they can recover faster."
The championship, now in its 63rd year, hosts about 2,700 athletes from across Canada and the northeastern United States.
Campbell said the regatta has been held in Port Dalhousie for more than 50 years. The Calder Cleland Memorial Trophy goes to the winner of the men's senior eight. This year's winner was the crew from Shawnigan Lake, B. C.
Campbell said the regatta was down about 10 schools this year, and he will investigate to see if rising gas prices made it too expensive for some of the schools to make the trip to Niagara.
A mid-afternoon shower and lightning storm Saturday was the only hiccup all weekend, causing a delay of about an hour and a half.
"We were monitoring the storm with Environment Canada and we had portable lightning meters around the course," he said. "Once it reached us, we let the race on the water finish and pulled everyone else out of the water. When the last boat was out, we could see the first lightning strikes in the distance."
With no rain delays on Sunday, the event's last race ended almost exactly on schedule.
Teams representing more than 100 high schools from across Canada and the U.S. were competing in heats and semi-finals in the three-day regatta. The event is the Canadian Secondary Schools National Championship, open to secondary schools all over North America. The Ann Arbor Pioneer High School Crew place 8 th overall in the Team standings. The Women's Team placed 6 th in their division and the Men's placed 9 th in their division. The Pioneer's were the highest placing US crew in the event, followed by Saratoga Springs from New York. The last race of the day featured the Women's Open Eights with Americans coming home with all three medals. Saratoga Springs won the race with TC Williams from Virginia coming in second and Ann Arbor Pioneer placing in the third position.
Two of the finest races of the day involved the Women's Junior Eight and Men's Junior Eight. Though both of those crews came up short by only fractions of a second, it made them the highest placing crews from Pioneer in there respective divisions since the Pioneers have been attending this race. The future of Pioneer Rowing looks bright.
**NOTES: Premier Canadian scholastic regatta, featuring top ranking crews
from across Canada and US vying for highest Canadian National Championship
honors. 128 schools, 2658 athletes.
**Pioneer had their strongest performance to date at this annual regatta
winning four medals and placing 8th in overall team points, the highest
ranking American team attending.

*** STATE CHAMPION?***
OR
JUST PASSING WIND?
Kinsington Metro Park, Michigan - The Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan held the Michigan State Rowing Championship at Kent Lake in Kingsington Metro Park on Saturday May 17, 2008 in less than satisfactory conditions. After a two hour delay the race-course was shifted to another location on the lake and racing officially started at 12:30 pm. The three and half hour delay resulted in the regatta never coming to a conclusion. The Pioneer Crew dominated every single event and would have taken the State Championship had it not been for the unfortunate weather conditions.
Coach Dove feels that every single crew should feel that they could lay claim to a State Championship title. The team has worked so hard to reclaim the titles they won in 2007 and should feel proud of the hard work and dedication they have given to this effort. Our crews won by open water in almost every event.
One of the most gratifying moments came at the close of the regatta when a young lady from Forrest Hills Central came up Coach Laura and myself to say how impressed she was with our crews and the way that they presented themselves on and off the water. It makes me believe that the coaching staff has taught the rowers how to row, but most of all how to be exemplary individuals. Many of the crews in Michigan strive to be like the Pioneers. Thank you, Pioneer Rowers. You have made this a rewarding experience.
The following letter was sent out to all the participates in this years regatta:
To all coaches, volunteers, parents and officials,
What a crazy day!!
It was amazing to me to witness the flexibility and willingness to adapt
during two days of ever changing conditions. I am always amazed at the great
lengths we will all go to in order to provide opportunities for our high
school athletes. You all should be commended for the way you reacted and
adapted to having to move an entire race venue from one side of the lake to
the other. This was no small feat considering there were 18 teams each with
their tents, boats, support equipment and 500 competitors. We also had to
set an entirely new race course (unfortunately shortened from 1500m to 900m)
as well as re-establish all of the infrastructure necessary to run the
event. This entire move was done in less than 2 hours. WOW!!.
Your patience was also exemplary. No one complained (at least I did not hear
any), no one got upset, no one went home. You proved that the rowing
community sticks together and puts the athletes first.
My only disappointment for the day was the fact that we were unable to race
any of the final events in the format that we had hoped for. If it were not
for the high winds and two fast moving storms that hit us, we would of been
able to complete the racing. At least we were able to run every qualifying
heat as well as the lightweight 8's that were listed as finals only. Every
athlete that was scheduled for a race, got to race.
While the history of the SRAM will show no final results or State Champions
being crowned for 2008, those of us who attended the inaugural event will
know that we did what was best for the kids and we can hold our heads up
high and be proud of our organization. We can also be proud of the
sportsmanship shown and the willingness of everyone to help each other. Some
day, the athletes that participated will remember and become the next
generation of coaches, parents, officials and volunteers that will dedicate
their time and efforts for their kids in order to keep the circle moving.
Please pass this email on to all of your volunteers that helped us out. Our
sincere thank you and appreciation for all of the help and cooperation.
I was honored and proud to be a part of this history and my hope is that you
too will feel the same way.
Thank you for all that you did to make this happen. I am already looking
forward to next years event and being able to officially crown our first
Scholastic State Rowing Champions.
Regards,
John Gaskin

*** Harsha Winds Blow***

East Fork Park, Ohio - The Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship at Lake Harsha in Clermont County's East Fork Park brought together 1,760 high school athletes to take part in the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship at Lake Harsha in Clermont County's East Fork Park. Inclement weather couldn't deter the 50 teams from 12 states.
The Pioneers put 13 crews into Grand Finals. The weather for the finals limited the number of events that could be run safely which unfortunately denied some of the Pioneer Crews from racing. The Pioneers were able to win 2 events, place second in one, place third in another, while placing four crews in fourth, one in fifth and one in sixth place. The Pioneers will also be sending a crew to the USRowing Youth National Championship for the third straight year.
The Saturday and Sunday races brought in 50 teams from 12 states, and as many as 10,000 visitors. The lawn leading down to the beach in front of the racecourse was full of sturdy tents set up by teams - or, more accurately, team parents.
The grounds also featured a food stand and several tents selling T-shirts and other rowing apparel, partly to keep the competitors occupied when they're not on the water.
"They get their seven minutes on the water, then what do you do with them? "Give them shopping, give them food."
Wind and lightning delayed the start of racing for a few hours. "That's the way it's been every weekend," said one parent who has been following racing this spring.
The Ann Arbor News had this to report about the regatta.
Pioneer, Huron row to medals
Pioneers haul includes 2 gold, River Rats 1 silver
Monday, May 12, 2008
From Local Reports
CINCINNATI - The Pioneer and Huron high school crew teams didn't come away from the Midwest Scholastic Championships empty-handed.
The Pioneer team rowed to four medals, including two gold, and the Huron team earned a silver, while placing two other boats in the finals, at the U.S. Rowing Association-sanctioned event on Harsha Lake during the weekend.
Pioneer's women's varsity 4 boat of Julia Darnton, Jessie Rampton, Esther Barrett, Inga Zwaanenberg and coxswain Colleen Macke took first place. Also placing first was the women's novice 8 boat of Anna DeBoer, Annika Gage, Rachel Bielajew, Claire Barrett, Zoe Psarouthakis, Jane McDonnell, Katie Munoz, Kendel Phillips and coxswain Sara Rontal.
Huron's women's junior 4 boat of Ashley Garzaniti, Maggie Zimmer-Parsons, Katie Kraft, Ellissa Black and coxswain Caryln Haffey raced to second place, while took women's junior 8 boat took fourth.
The Pioneer men's novice 8 and varsity 4 placed second and third, respectively. Both Huron's men's lightweight 8 and novice men's 4 qualified for the finals, but the novice 4's final was cancelled because of inclement weather.

The Pioneers were not able to defend their Hebda Cup Championship due to the high winds that made the course to risky to row on. The Team packed up and went back to their boathouse and ran a quick scrimmage to keep the rowers sharp.
Coach Dove was especially disappointed in not being able to possibly walk away with the Cup for another year. The three-year run has come to a close.

Grand Rapids, Michigan - The Pioneer Crew traveled to the Westside of the state to start their spring rowing campaign. With 21 crews entered the Pioneers completely dominated the event. The Pioneers won 12 of the 20-event regatta. The Boys and Girls won the overall championship by a lopsided margin. Most of the Pioneer crews won by open water in their events.
The Pioneers have been practicing hard for this season and where extremely gratified to see the early season practices have paid off. The Pioneer Crew will travel to Wyandotte this coming weekend to take on the East side of the state crew in the Hebda Cup Regatta, Saturday, April 26, 2008.
The Grand Rapids Press: ... Don LeBlanc, who brought high-school crew to West Michigan, organizes the regatta and who almost canceled this year's event because of the height of the river earlier last week...
With crew teams traveling to from the Chicago area, Indiana and the east side of Michigan, LeBlanc had until Thursday afternoon to decide whether or not to stage the regatta. At the time, the docks in Riverside Park were flooded.
Ann Arbor Pioneer won the overall boys and girls championships Saturday afternoon, while Forest Hills Central's boy's team finished tied for second with Ann Arbor Huron.
Rockford's girl's team finished second.

THE SHELL GAME
Area rowing teams ready for a season on the water
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Huron River Rats
The River Rats' strength is a veteran boys group led by seniors Coleman Alexander, Matt Baxter, Zach Baker, Charlie Bonham, twins Nick Kraft and Mike Kraft, Chris Jalilevand and junior Nick Wang. Jessica Poth is the only returning senior on the girls team. The team also has 19 first-time rowers "who never had an oar in their hands'' until practice started this spring,'' coach Tom Kraft said. "The main goal is to teach kids to row well and enjoy the sport. It's not a sport that a lot of kids experience early in life,'' Kraft said. "I'm really excited about the season. We're getting faster every season, and I'm looking forward to seeing how we do.''
Pioneer Pioneers
Opposite of Huron, the Pioneers have a strong returning girls team, and it's the boys team that must make its mark. Julia Darnton, Angela Frakes and Esther Barrett will lead a girls group that had success everywhere last season, as the Pioneers have become a force in the Midwest. Ian Gardiner, Josh Foster and Alex Spatzier are the top boys returners. "It's not a win-at-all-cost kind of team. But we try to interest the kids by having winning on the agenda,'' coach Rich Griffith said. "The women will be incredibly competitive as they usually are. The boys are in a underdog season. They have some time to catch from the fall.''
Saline Hornets
The Hornets' light fours boys boat with Jeff Hartman, Matt Smolinski, Sean Connors and John Recknagel is one of the best in the Midwest, coach Dave Fiske said. "They're going to be very good, but I want to be cautiously optimistic,'' Fiske said. "They've still got to do the work.'' Allison Cook, Rosie Jones, Kori DeBolt and Erin Lankerd are the top returning rowers for the sophomore-dominated girls team. "They're so positive. This fall they impressed me with their commitment,'' girls coach Bridgette Sparks said. Sparks, who founded the Saline program with Fiske five years ago, is taking most of the spring off after having her first child.
This is not a sport that can be practiced in the gym. The Pioneer and Huron programs share a spot on Argo Pond with University of Michigan rowers and the Ann Arbor Rowing Club. After its first years on Sand Lake in the Irish Hills, Saline now practices on Ford Lake - with hopes of gaining a permanent home on the lake soon. The likelihood that Ann Arbor's new Skyline High School will develop teams and a city proposal to remove Argo Dam (eliminating the pond) have the Huron and Pioneer programs concerned and involved. They hope not only to save the dam but gain additional access. "We're pretty much maxed out at this point,'' Huron coach Tom Kraft said. "On any given day there could be between 200 and 400 people rowing. We think the city has realized we're a viable component of river use and should be accommodated.''

Michael Dove, above, a founder of the Pioneer program, is heading home for his native Hawaii. He'll coach the girls team this spring and then start planning his move. Dove, who manages Northside Grill, moved to the area in the 1970s after graduate school at the University of Michigan. His son rowed for Huron, and Dove was tapped when a Pioneer group wanted to form a team in 1999. "We had 18 kids, no boathouse, no boats, nothing,'' he said. The team borrowed Ann Arbor Rowing Club equipment to get started and now owns its own boats and has almost 100 competitors. "The legacy of the program is based on the work he's done,'' Pioneer head coach Rich Griffith said. "He's been enthusiastic and dedicated, and it's a great sacrifice. His girls are absolutely tops in the state.'' Dove said he's ready for something new. "I turned 60 in February, and told myself that it's time to start the last 20 years of my life doing something else. I've lived here half my life, and I still haven't adjusted to winters.''
The state's rowing programs have joined to form the Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan. It'll be the state's first high school umbrella organization for rowing. The association will hold its first regatta May 17 on Kensington Metropark's Kent Lake and hopes eventually to make the event the official state championship. This year, the May 10 Midwest Regionals on the Ohio River in Cincinnati remains the premier event.
COACH DOVE'S SHIPPING NEWS
*** Was Up For Spring 2008***
Ann Arbor, Michigan - Dove turns 60! It is just time for me say goodbye to coaching full time and have notified the school that this is my last season with Pioneer. I would like to take this moment to thank all of you that have been a part of my life to this point. I have set up a number of goals for myself over the years and have been lucky enough to see many of them achieved. The success of the Pioneer Crew ranks up there at the top. The biggest changes I seen have the growth on rowing from 18 rowers, no boats, not boathouse, no varsity status to 90 + rowers, 9 eight-person rowing shells, 6 four-person rowing shells, a trailer, a community boathouse and huge parent involvement. I look forward to this Spring Season and will cherish the moments. I promised myself that when I turned 60 that I would make a number of changes in my life and coaching full time will have to take a back seat to my preparation to 20 more good years. I hope to stay involved in coaching but want less of a time commitment. So we shall see what we shall see!
CREW NEWS:
Jacob Merrill has been taking part in the Junior National Team testing over the winter and has been submitting his times to the USRowing Junior National Team site. Congratulations to committing to excellence.
Julia Darnton and Jessica Rampton participated in the Mowtown Madness Erg Regatta in February and came home with a Gold and Bronze medal respectively in the lightweight division. Well done. Erg regatta's are another way of testing yourself and putting yourself on the line to see where you stand. Great job girls! Julia has also given a verbal commitment to the University of Michigan and we hope to see her rowing there in the future.
Winter Training at the Leslie Golf course clubhouse has been a great addition to staying fit and getting stronger, fitter, faster. Those of you that have been coming on a regular basis and doing the work should see a great benefit when spring season starts.
Put in the bank so you can make that withdrawal latter.
New eights for the boys varsity and girls varsity should be here when the spring season starts. Looking forward to putting a fast crew in it.
My vision of the girls varsity. We will have 3 competitive boats this spring. Obviously the Senior Varsity 8 is looking ultra fast and the Lightweight 8 looks good. We need the Junior 8 to step it up a notch.
Senior and Junior leadership is crucial to our success. People that just stand out in my mind for driving our team forward are. Seniors, Julia Darnton, Angela Frakes, Emily Smalligan, Susan Murphy, Elaine Ezekiel. Juniors, Colleen Macke, Katie Kohrman, Ali Breeding, Jess Rampton and Riley Linebaugh. The women's crew has been state champions for the last two years. We have a big target on our backs and teams all over the state would love to take us down a notch.
On the boys side Senior leadership looks to be. Seniors, Ian Gardiner, Alex Spatzier and Josh Foster. Juniors, Collin Shields, Karl Deboer and John Kemink. The Boys also have huge targets on their backs and will be pressed hard to repeat the success of the 2007 campaign.
Alumni News:
