Carolina Chickadee

8/02/2006

It has been very hot and very dry in middle Tennessee this summer. Even though we put fresh water in the bird bath every morning, the birds will grab a quick drink where ever they can. Lately a Carolina Chickadee has been helping itself to the water in the "ant trap" of our hummingbird feeder. This small cup of water surrounds the hanger rod of the feeder and is supposed to keep ants away from the sugar water in the feeder. The chickadee clings to the hanger rod and dips into the cup, then raises its head and swallows. They really are quite the little acrobats.
