While the fellow with the sword and fancy uniform usually gets all the attention, the truth is the guy with the three stripes topped with a diamond really runs the infantry company. He is the one who forms the company in the morning, takes roll call, assigns duties and instructs drill, all the while doing the paperwork. The first sergeant has to do his job well for he is the diplomat keeping the men below him pleased and the officers of the company and of the battalion satisfied with their performance on the field and in camp.
The first sergeant's job was to run the company when the commander was not present. Since we are civilian hobbyists today and come together only on weekends, there have been some changes in his duties. But a good first sergeant still must know his drill manual, manage his men effectively and set a good physical example. Being a first sergeant means more than being the fellow who stands near the officer for formations and salutes the colonel at parade. You must know your manual thoroughly; work well with the battalion sergeant major, company officers and men; and physically and mentally live up to the standards expected. It is the only way to earn the respect of the men under you.
