A first sergeant's effectiveness is greatly improved when learns to manage the company properly through use of this staff.
                        Appearance
This is not just your physical appearance, but your overall presence and demeanor. You must let the men know you are serious about doing your job right. Don't become a dictator, but explain to the company that some discipline will be required if they are to properly portray a military unit. Although personal appearance is important, you do not have to rush out and purchase a sword, baldric and sash (which were rarely worn in the field). Rather, lead by example with your existing kit. Wear your traps properly and keep your weapon and uniform in good repair. You set the tone and example for the enlisted men of the entire company.
Anyone who has been a first sergeant will agree that it is a tough job. The good news is, when the job is done right the first sergeant can instill pride and he can still allow everyone to have fun.
