| Paul Ortega was born in Glendale, CA in 1975 to Jennifer and Ricardo Ortega. He had a fairly normal child hood filled with a rich blend both Peruvian and Catholic traditions, and good old American pop culture. It was not until his early teens that he experienced any ghostly encounters. At first he acknowledged these cemetery and old attic encounters to his friends and family, but when they either didn't believe him or he was told to "grow up and stop acting like a kid" he never again included them in the unique world that is seemed only he could see. At age 15, at the insistence of his father, Paul finally took a trip with his father to spend the summer with his grandparents in South America, so he could "know where he came from." Three nights into his visit he was startled awake by the voice of an old woman calling his name, He followed the voice out of his grandparent's house and into the wilderness. He made his way through the night until he came to an old ruin (consisting of steps and pillars and a broken altar) where the Wise Old Woman; grandmother spirit to all Shaman past & present, sprang from the earth. She told him of great men & women, of sages & scholars, of Shaman and Dreamspeakers and the spiritual leaders, guardians and caretakers of the human race and the spirits of the earth. She told him that she saw great potential in him and offered to teach & guide him as a mentor in the ways of the Shaman if in return he would dedicate his life to this cause. He knew in his heart that here words were true and they spoke until dawn of spirits & dreams and the path of his future. He returned to his family but spoke nothing of his promise to his spirit Totem. He spent the rest of his summer leading a double life that would later come to be his norm, dividing his time between his family and learning from the Wise Old Woman & the mortals she would send him to meet. Upon returning to the U.S. he continued to follow the guidance and advice of the Wise Old Woman and continued his training on the Shaman's Path. After graduation he attended Arizona State University at the recommendation of his Totem, and studied business at the advice of his parents. His sophomore year he took a Native American studies class with Professor David Stone, a Dreamspeaker, who introduced him to the Tradition. During his initiation into the Tradition his primordial essence & avatar were awakened giving him his primal marks of a shaman. He graduated college with a double major in Business & Continental Native American Mythology. Even before graduation he began spending his summers speaking at neo-pagan bookstores & spiritual centers on spiritual living in modern American society and began working on a book of the same subject. He now travels all over the American continent as a motivational speaker teaching the values and methods of spiritual living at new age conventions, seminars and spiritual retreats while helping other Dreamspeakers he meets and fulfilling shamanic tasks for his Totem. He is currently in Las Vegas marketing his new book "American Spirit, Spiritual Living in Modern American Society" via a book signing and weeklong seminar. |
