What is Pilates?
Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates, a German-born circus performer, gymnast, diver, skier and boxer whose childhood illnesses (asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever) sparked a quest for him to overcome his physical limitations.

During World War I, he began fitting hospital beds with springs and straps to help rehabilitate wounded soldiers. Pilates' motive was to devise a series of controlled movements that engages the mind and body in developing strong flexible muscles without building bulk. He designed five hundred exercises that demand concentration and focus on developing abdomen strength and flexibility to ensure proper posture and to reduce risk of injury.

Group Mat Classes

The body conditioning technique of Joseph Pilates taught on the mat is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises to tone muscle and improve posture, flexibility and balance. This class will definitely challenge you at any fitness level.

In Joseph Pilates's technique, you use your muscles in a very precise and focused way. The emphasis is on the quaility of the movement, often with many muscles being used in synchronization within only a given exercise. It also flattens abdominals and improves sports performance.

Pilates is like a complete body massage as it alleviates stress and it revitalizes you for the rest of the day.
