Multiplayer Game Listing
Last updated 16 Aug 1998

This list has fallen behind a bit... I'm sure there are many PSX and Saturn games not listed here. I'll see what I can do about updating it soon... Thanks to Zerothis for lots of additions and corrections.

This file is not endorsed or overseen by any of the mentioned companies. It's maintained solely by myself, and could even (gasp!) have errors in it. Feel free to distribute any part of the text, as long as you give me credit.

Owning a Lynx as well as a Turbografx and Genesis with Team Player has made me realize that while 2 player games are fun, the fun increases to a much greater degreee with each player that joins in. I've looked around for a listing of games that support the Team Player, but couldn't find any. So, I decided to start my own list of games that allow for more than 2 players to play simultaneously. I hope you find it useful!

If you have any additions, corrections, or comments please mail them to me!

How do different home systems allow for more than two players?

Atari 2600 (VCS)

The 2600 was one of the first video game systems. Although it had 2 controller ports, a pair of paddles could plug into each port allowing for 4 player games.

Odyssey²

One game, Quest for the Rings, was a combination board game and video game. 3 to 5 players could play using two controllers and the keyboard on the unit. Actually, the keyboard isn't used often, but 3 people technically are playing simultaneously.

Atari 5200

Early models of the 5200 had 4 controller ports, but no released game actually supports 4 players simultaneously. Asteroids was listed as a 4 player game in early 5200 catalogs but that game was never released. In addition, Xari Arena and Football (prototypes) might be four player games - I haven't played or heard anything definite about them, though. Finally, Super Breakout supports controllers 3 and 4, but each player has to take turns.

Atari 8-bit

However, the Atari 8-bit computer line (Atari 400, 800) also had four controller ports and used them. The 5200 and Atari 800 are almost identical machines, the only game related difference in the systems is that the 5200 uses analog controllers while the 800 uses digital ones with fewer buttons. In fact, many 5200 games were cracked and made playable on the Atari 800. Additionally, the Atari computers can use 2600 paddles for up to 8 players.

Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom)

The NES has two peripherals that allow for 4 players, the FourScore and the Satellite. The only difference between the two is that the Satellite is wireless.
Camerica/Codemasters/Galoob made their own adapter that supports 8 players, and is also FourScore compatible.

Nintendo Gameboy

The Gameboy usually links only 2 players. Using the multiplayer adapter that's included with F1 Race you can connect up to 4. For what it's worth, here's the list of regular 2 player link games, culled from Nintendo's listing.

Turbografx-16 (PC Engine)

The Turbografx-16 allows up to 5 players with the TurboTap. Without the TurboTap you can only play one player games.

Atari Lynx

The Lynx can link an indefinite number of players, though the game with the highest limit of players is Slime World at 8. T-Tris has an unspecified limit of players.

Genesis (Mega Drive)

The Genesis has three adapters for multiplayer games. I reccomend the Team Player version2. Here's the story: Electronic Arts released a 4 player accessory called the 4WayPlay. Around the same time Sega released a multiplayer accessory called the Team Player. Electronic Arts games support the 4WayPlay, while other Genesis games support the Team Player. Some support both. To remedy this confusing situation, Sega released a remodeled, but more expensive, Team Player that supports both. Because the Electronic Arts adapter uses both controller ports, the maximum amount of players is 4. The Sega adapter allows 4 controllers to access one controller port. You can have a maximum of 5 players with one Team Player, or 8 with two Team Players. These adapters work with the Genesis add-ons Sega-CD and 32X.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom)

Hudson makes a SNES adapter called the Super Multitap that allows 4 joypads to be plugged into a controller port, allowing for 5 players. Bullet Proof Software makes the Super Link and Performance makes the Super 5-Play (not endorsed by Nintendo) which do the same. Finally Naki makes the Tribal Tap which supports 5 joypads for a total of 6 players, though no games I know of actually support that many. Only one adapter can be plugged into the second controller port. If you plug an adapter into the first controller port, the game tells you to put it in the second. Check out FM2000's SNES page for more detailed information.

Atari Jaguar

The Jaguar allows for multiplayer games either through networking or a multiplayer adapter. A multi-tap can be connected to each control slot for up to 8 players. It's also rumored that up to 32 Jaguar controllers can be hooked up by daisychaining the multi-taps. No games support more than 4 players.

3DO

The 3DO Control Pad 2 has its own controller port that allows other controllers to "daisychain" off it. (one controller plugs into the system, the next controller plugs into that one, etc) for an "infinite" amount of players. Somewhere around 30 is where loss of signal starts to occur, and a reasonable limit for games is 16. (Thanks to sirdyst@slip.net and Maria Harrell at 3DO for clearing that up). The 3DO Control Pad 1 doesn't have the daisychain port, so keep this in mind if you're buying controllers.

Sega Saturn

The Saturn has the 6 Player adapter that allows six controllers to access one controller port. So, a maximum of seven players with one adapter, or 12 with two adapters. That's right, 12 players! On one screen!

Sony Playstation

The Playstation has a Multi-Tap that allows four controllers and four memory cards to access a controller port. So yes, a maximum of eight players. In addition, up to four players might be able to play on two linked consoles (see accessories page.) For more information about the games, check out the Playstation Galleria and Playstation Gamer.

Nintendo64

The Nintendo64 has four controller ports. Hudson Japan has an adapter for the fourth control slot that expands it to five more slots for 8 players. If one was hooked up to each slot that'd be 20 players, though I'm not sure this is possible.

Sega Dreamcast

The Dreamcast has four controller ports. It also has support for modem / cable modem play according to rumors.

PC

Home computers have lots of games that support networking, but not very many that allow more than two players on one screen. The main problem is that it's difficult to connect that many controllers to a PC. I won't go into listing supported games here, but for more information check out the Multijoy Homepage (6 players) Sidewinder page (4 players), and Gravis GRiP system (4 players).
