Flaherty's Spotlight
(From the July-September, 2001 Newsletter)
Tucked
away in a strip mall on Main Street in Lombard is Flaherty’s Beef ‘N
Brew, one of those places that once it’s visited, a return trip is mandatory.
One of Lombard’s by-laws allows for no beer signs outside an establishment.
So it’s up to the potential patron to spot this place to be. Once discovered,
the second trip is a piece of cake. Owner-proprietor Larry O (the last name
eludes me – it’s Polish, though) and wife Patty run one of the
best little places I’ve ever worked, and the clientele follows suit.
Interspersed with the daily beer and drink specials is some of the best pub
food around – especially when a party or special event looms (St. Pat’s
Day, the annual anniversary party in August, Christmas Party, Golf Outing
feast, etc. Uncle Larry does it big, with the fried chicken, polish sausage
and sauerkraut, plus mostaciolli for these special days. Normal fare includes
many burgers and sandwiches, the usual bar appetizers and excellent frozen
pizza. A mixed patron assemblance finds local people from all walks of life
– tradesmen, business people, young, old, in-between and even the faculty
from Montini High School. This writer plays here only four times a year, so
I treasure the opportunity when it arrives, and the regulars who seldom fail
to respond in kind. (The next time will be August 17th, which just happens
to be Larry’s 22nd year at this location.) Come out and give us a shout.
Better yet – stay for a drink, and spend the rest of the evening with
some robust song and libation. Flaherty’s Beef ‘N Brew is
located at 418 S. Main St. in downtown Lombard. Pub hours are
11-1 a.m. weekdays, and 11-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Credit cards
are accepted, and so is everyone’s cash. See you there soon. Don’t
miss that anniversary party. You’ll rue the day the day you do.
