Mission

It is important to know the Elizabeth Wainwright Fund for IBC Research is NOT a foundation. This endowment fund is managed and housed at Tufts-NEMC.

The purpose of this fund is to support the research efforts of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Tufts-NMEC in its work to find answers about Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC), including the development of a regional registry of IBC cases, the only one of its kind in New England.

Elizabeth was indeed a remarkable woman and it saddens us as we are reminded of the pain she had to endure from the diagnosis in November 2001 to her passing in December 2002.

Our passion and drive for this fund is inspired by these words Elizabeth told her doctors just days after receiving her diagnosis.

"I will not be just a hosptial number, you will know who I am!"

It is this statement that gives us the drive to see this fund succeed and help so many other woman suffering from this lethal type of breast cancer, as well as others not yet diagnosed.

Profile

Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) is generally considered to be the most aggressive and lethal form of breast cancer. Only 34% percent of women diagnosed with IBC are still living three years after diagnosis, compared with 90% of patients with other types of breast carcinoma. IBC affects women who are on average, significantly younger than those with other types of breast cancer. Although it is relatively uncommon, accounting for 1%-3% of all breast cancers, alarmingly the rate of incidence has doubled between the 1970's and the 1990's, for reasons that are unclear. Despite this fact, relatively little research has focused on IBC.

With that said this is why the Elizabeth Wainwright Fund for IBC Research is supporting the efforts of the IBC-Initiative at Tufts-NEMC with its groundbreaking research project which has created an IBC registry in New England.

The Elizbeth Wainwright Fund for IBC Research IS now an ENDOWMENT Fund....that will around for generations to come of Liz's family to remember her by as well continue to help so many in their fight of this deadly disease.
