Brewpub of the Month

Triumph Brewpub
138 Nassau St.
Princeton, NJ 08542

Driving down Nassau St. in busy downtown Princeton, NJ, you would  have to be looking for this place in order to see it. The entrance off the street is very inconspicuous and, once through the doors, a long hallway greets you before you enter the heart of the building. But then it opens up into a bright, beautiful space that will make you feel glad you stopped. It is a very comfortable ambiance with very friendly people who will serve you great food and fresh beer.

The restaurant is a"cozy" place to sit with nice booths, some scattered tables, an open bar and a private dining room for parties of 35 and less. The tanks from the 10 Barrel vertically-stacked system overlook the whole place leaving no doubt you are in a brewpub! Tom Stevenson, the brewer, makes sure there are always some interesting choices to make when it comes to the brews. He keeps several flagship beers: a Honey Wheat, an Amber Ale, Bengal Gold IPA and a Stout and, has to date, brewed more than fifty other types of seasonals and specials in whatever direction his imagination led him. They usually have at least 7 different beers on tap for the customers' pleasure. Always something interesting here!

Tom is also very active in the New Jersey Craft Brewers' Guild and helps to promote his craft through this venue. The Guild would like someday to see the laws in NJ relax a bit and allow the brewpub to become a little more competitive in the Food & Beverage market.
The dream of Ray & Erica Disch and Adam Rechnitz, who had to first get the State of NJ to make brewpubs legal, Triumph opened in 1995 to a very interested public. Many came to see what a restaurant that made its own beer was like, and now return for the quality and value of the selections. The menu is a bold, eclectic one that could please the palate of almost anyone. Influences of Asian, Southwestern, and others makes for some very interesting combinations. Also ready to handle banquets from just a few up to 200, they serve freshly prepared meals the way you want them.
The brewery is opened on Saturdays for tours for those interested in the brewing process. I have had some memorable beers here...Jewish Rye Beer made with caraway seeds, Tom's Berliner Weisse with raspberry, woodruff or plain...all excellent,a Cherry Stout which was exceptional, a handpumped Nut Brown Ale...so many beers, so little time!
This is not a place to be missed! The hardest part is finding a place to park. Right across the street from Princeton University, parking in a college town is always trying, but I've always been lucky and never had a problem. They also have music on several nights of the week. Their website is no longer up as far as I can see, so the schedules will have to be searched out by phone.
