Colorectal Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States but is one of the most preventable cancers. Delaware 's colorectal cancer rate ranks as one of the highest in the nation. More than one third of colorectal cancer deaths within the state could be prevented if people over the age of 50 had regular screening tests. Unlike many other cancers, there are reliable and cost effective tests that can find colorectal cancer early. Yet tragically, too few Delawareans know about or take advantage of these life-saving tests. Screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer by finding pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed before they develop into cancer. |

Colon cancer is a hereditary cancer and it affects families. Unlike other cancers, colon cancer is completely preventable, treatable and beatable if diagnosed soon enough. One of the greatest gifts we can give our family members is the gift of health. Screening for preventable disease will insure ongoing health. Ask family members that have reached the screening age if they have been screened for colorectal cancer. If they have not been tested, insist until they do. Encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles; eat a high fiber diet, stop smoking, exercise and maintain an ideal body weight. These lifestyle changes will further decrease their risk of colon cancer and many other diseases. Together you can build a healthier future for yourself and your family members |
