What you need to keep your computer running well is an anti virus and anti spyware program. Some people like to use a software firewall. I use a router and if you use it properly you don't need a software firewall. Be certain to turn on the hardware firewall and change the default password. I keep the Windows firewall on anyway.

If you need software for opening and saving documents a grate free program is openoffice. You may need something for pdfs I use Foxit Reader its better then Acrocrap reader i mean Acrobat reader, a good browser is firefox, for playing your DVD and mp3s a good free one is VLC media player, a good burning platform is Nero (be sure to do a custom install uncheck ask toolbar. I only load Nero burn rom cover designer wave editor and special features only). When all your software is loaded make sure to run a defrag and run a disk cleanup, this helps keep things running smoothly. I recommend getting your own copy of widows or using Linux. It is important to do a clean install, update your operating system and all your software. Have fun out there and be safe.
