While Sitting In The Dark
Traveling cross-country by automobile became more difficult for us after Sandy experienced a stroke several years ago. She becomes tired easily and sitting in one position in a car seat is problematic due to the hemiparesis and weakness of one side of her body. Many times she is ready to stop for the day and get a motel room by 4:00 in the afternoon. Quite often, as soon as we have found some food at a nearby restaurant, she is ready to turn out all the lights, close her eyes and sleep, even though it is still quite early. At such times I have only two choices, either go to bed or sit in the dark for some time, because I can't go anywhere and leave her alone.
We were heading for Colorado to see our children one time and we stopped in the afternoon at a motel in Goodland, Kansas. We found a restaurant and had something to eat then went back to the motel room because Sandy was tired. I helped her put her pajamas on and she asked me to turn off all the lights and she closed her eyes and was asleep in less than a minute. The motel room was dark with the shades pulled and the lights out so I found the most comfortable chair in the room and sat there while my mind wondered. The words and melody for a song came to me and I managed to scratch the words down on a piece of paper. It is difficult to write in the dark but here is a link to the song, entitled "While Sitting In The Dark", in either wma or mp3 format.
