2009 Maryland Microbrewery Festival

Homebrew Competition Results

There were 25 entries this year, with 12 Scottish Ales and 13 Belgian Dubbels.  The preliminary round was judged at DOG Brewing Company in Westminster on Sunday, September 20.  The results of the preliminary judging that were held on Sept 20th at DOG Brewing Company are:

Category 18B – Belgian Dubbel:

1st Place – Geoff Butts & Kevin Mapp*

2nd Place – Russ Lorber*

3rd Place – Chris Rawa

Category 9C – Scottish Export 80:

1st Place – Steve Kranz*

2nd Place – Eric Krichinsky*

3rd Place - Warren Markert

(* 1st and 2nd Place winners in each category were prize winners.  Each winner received a pair of elegant, engraved Waterford pilsner beer glasses.)

The Best of Show judging took place during the Festival on Saturday, September 26.  The top three beers in each category (those named above) advanced to the Best of Show round.  All 6 finalist beers were poured and set before the 4 judges, for a blind evaluation.  The judges first discussed the “best” of each category until there was consensus.  Then the judges debated between the two top beers – which would be the final selection?  The criterion for Best of Show was subjective, and the judges were to simply select the beer they liked the most.

It was a very tough decision.   All 6 finalist beers were excellent – a very tough choice.

Best of Show Winner for 2009:

Steve Kranz, Scottish Export 80 Shilling Ale

500 gallons of Windsor House 80 Schilling Amber Ale were brewed at Dog Brewing Company on October 30th.  A “tapping” date will also be set to unveil the beer at Buffalo Wild Wings in early December..

Congratulations to this year's winners, and thanks very much to all of this year's entrants.
