McDonald Island collects, stores and withdraws natural gas for PG&E's residential, commercial and industrial customers. The facility consists of one injection and two withdrawal platforms sited over an underground geologic formation capable of receiving and maintaining 80 billion cubic feet of gas at a field pressure of 2070 psig. The injection platform utilizes two reciprocating compressors that take natural gas from the pipeline system and inject it to storage more than a mile beneath the earth. Two withdrawal platforms are capable of discharging the pressurized gas back into the pipeline system as customer demand increases.
