Well, the weather finally turned nice enough for me to take some pictures of my just about finished PDRacer, hull #20. The boat is, as yet, unnamed. However, my six year old daughter has named it "Earless Elephant". I don't know if I can live with that.
The sail is an old windsurfer sail that was given to me for free by the buyer of my MacGregor 19 Powersailer that I sold last September. I really wanted to build a simple dipping lug rig...but since the sail was sitting there, who could say no?
I was hoping to build this quick and simple. Well...the quick part didn't work but it is simple. Anyone taking the time to look at these pictures will notice that I chose speed (of assembly) and simplicity over aesthetics every time.
Lawn sailing. |
So simple even a 3 year old can sail it! |
Kick up rudder mounted with two standard door hinges and a simple piece of threaded rod. I should have taken the picture from the other side. |
Swinging leeboard mounted with a single bolt. |
Freely rotating mast step made with two pieces of PVC (one inside the other) and two u-bolts. Note that the cleats are on the mast so that line tension does not change as the mast rotates. |
Okay, sprits don't get any more basic than this. Yet another piece of PVC with some line running down the center and caribiners on each end. Simplicity over aesthetics... |
Another shot of the mast step. Will it last more than one outing? |
Top of a paint bucket glued into the bulkhead using some old 3M5200 I had sitting around. |
