Performance Standards – Roadway

Main Roads:
Whenever possible shall be kept free of water erosion through employing: ditches, culverts, and broad-based dips where appropriate. Road bases shall be constructed to permit surfaces to be hardened, minimizing their tendency to produce potholes, wash-boarding, and ruts in wet weather. Where required to minimize speeding, speed bumps or other slowing devices shall be employed. Appropriate safety-related signs shall be erected. Roadways and shoulders shall be sufficiently wide to permit two vehicles going in opposite directions to pass.

Whenever possible, shall be kept free of water erosion. Roadways shall be at least one lane wide.

General
Requirements
1. In those places where the physical width of the roadway and its berms dictate, the minimum width requirements may be adjusted accordingly.
2. To prevent water crossing roadways, ditches and other water channels shall be kept free of debris and obstructions thereby preventing overflow.
3. Vegetation shall be trimmed or cut back to permit safe driver visibility and maintain the minimum width standard to include roadway shoulders. Further where required, herbicides shall be used to prevent growth between wheel paths.
