  PERIOD MEAL PLAN MENUS (War Week)

The theme for this year is literature. Base your feast on the food mentioned or suggested by a specific piece of medieval or Renaissance literature.

Saturday, July 31 : Roz--Le Roman de la Rose, 13-14th cent. France:  This work was begun by Guillaume de Lorris as an allegory on courtly love in the 13th cent., but was finished by Jean de Meun as a social satire at a later date. This work was widely distributed throughout the middle ages, and is considered one of the great definitive medieval works of literature.
The feast: Herbed hand washing water, Manchet rolls, Mixed pickles, Herb salat with oil and salt, Roast pork, Assorted sauces; Barbe Robert (mustard), Cameline sauce, Green sauce, Yellow pepper sauce, Applesauce, Forcemeat "hedgehogs," Mushroom pasties, Frumenty, Candied orange peel, Gingerbread comfits, Meringues, Hypocras or red wine

Sunday, August 1:  William--Dante's Inferno, early 14th cent. Italy: One of the most famous pieces of medieval literature, written by Date Alighieri (1265-1321) in the early 14th. cent while in exile from his beloved Florence. The work describes the author's visit to hell, led by Virgil, the Roman poet, and details the various torments visited on the souls of sinners through the nine levels of hell.

Monday, August 2: Catherine--Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus," Elizabethan:
14 killings, 9 of them on stage, 6 severed members, 1 rape (or 2 or 3, depending on how you count), 1 live burial, 1 case of insanity and 1 of cannibalism--an average of 5.2 atrocities per act, or one for every 97 lines. This tragedy was written around 1593, and like many of Shakespeare's other works, borrowed heavily from classical works by Euripides, Seneca, and Ovid.

Francesca--The Decameron, 14th cent. Italy: Written by Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), the work is set in the time of the great plague of the 14th cent. and consists of a number of novelle, or short stories, supposedly told by fictional characters over the course of 10 days.
