Pennsic XLI

July 28-August 12,  2012

By now you should know the drill. You must pre-register with the Coopers and send us a copy with your camp fees. You can now pre-register on-line. Again, everyone who camps with Wild Rose must pre-register with the Coopers by the cut off date! If you don’t pre-register, you cannot camp with House Wild Rose. We must have this information and money by June 30! Send a copy of your pre-registration, plus the following information, and your camp fees to:

Camp and food fees:

1. Camp fee--$40.00 per person for regular campers/$30.00 per person for those who are there for the first 3 days of set-up.

2. Period meal plan (mandatory); $8.00 per person for the days you are there for feast.

3. Non-period meal plan (optional); $6.00 per person

For each person in your party:

PERIOD MEAL PLAN

There will be a period meal plan during Pennsic war week. The cost is $8.00 per night before June 1. Meals will be served at 7:00--7:30 PM.

Kitcheners and chefs:  This is a good opportunity for novice kitcheners to get experience. See the Kitchener and Chefs Page.

Diners:
1. Everyone will be expected to do kitchen duty. This will be on the duty roster.
2. Meals will be planned for 7:00--7:30 PM so that clean up can be done before dark.
3. If you have food allergies, or you are vegetarian, contact Roz.
4. If you want to invite a guest to dinner, clear it with the kitchener as far in advance as possible. Any guest who joins us for more than one night will be expected to help clean up and to contribute to the meal or pay for it. [This rule is subject to change with the approval of everyone in camp.]
5. There will be a separate set of sinks for washing personal dishes. Personal dishes should be washed immediately and returned to your tent. They are not to be left at the sinks or in the dining area.

CAMP RULES

Fees:

1.There is a $40.00 ($30.00 for set-up crew) per person camp fee for the week to cover the cost of firewood, propane, camp torch fuel, ice, drinking water, dishwashing materials, insect deterrents, etc. We must have this by June 30. If you have to cancel after this date, we will reimburse you.
2. Everyone will be expected to help with other necessary camp items. Everyone should bring citronella torch fuel for their personal torches. Also plan on buying drinking water to add to the encampment keg while you are there.

General Rules:

1. Don’t be a slob. Keep your stuff in your tent unless you are using it, and put it back when you are done with it. No one came to Pennsic to look at your dirty socks/duct tape/snack food bags/etc.
2. There is a big garbage can and a smaller aluminum can recycling bag in camp (both are disguised as burlap grain bags). Dispose of garbage immediately and appropriately.
3. Cigarettes are to be field stripped and thrown in garbage or firepit. Bottle tops should be disposed of appropriately. Do not leave butts or bottle tops on the ground!
4. Keep everything that looks mundane in your tent, cover it with something appropriate, or hide it inside something else.
5. There will be a duty roster with assignments for taking out garbage, filling tiki torches, etc. We will do our best to work around everyone’s schedule, but you are responsible for doing your jobs. If you can’t, then you are responsible for getting someone else to do them for you.
6. If you bring a child into camp, you must supervise that child at all times. If there is a problem with this, you and the child will be asked to leave the camp.
7. The camp will be roped off from dinner time on through the evening. Only invited guests, or those known to us will be allowed in after that time. During the day, if there is someone in camp that you don’t know who is not obviously with someone who lives there, politely ask them who they are there to see. If they don’t have an answer, politely ask them to leave. The main purpose of this rule is to keep out people we don’t know. Anyone that you want to have in camp is welcome.
8. If you are the only person in camp, day or night, and you must leave, rope off the gate on your way out.
9. No illegal substances. No underage (21 in Penn.) drinking.

Weregild: This is an ancient custom that settles many disputes amicably and is the basis for the modern tort system. Literally it means "man money" and requires that you compensate the family if you kill a productive member of the family. Practical application in camp--if someone else has to clean up your mess, or is in any other way inconvenienced by lameness on your part, you will be expected to compensate that person in some material fashion--either doing chores for them or presenting them with an appropriate gift. Once paid the dispute is settled, and there are no hard feelings.

Bath house:

1. We have a shower system in place with a propane water heater. Everyone will receive training on how to use the shower. You will be expected to follow the directions each and every time you take a shower.
2. Don’t leave wet towels and other stuff lying around the shower area. There are shelves and hanging shelves in the shower that you can use, but don’t be greedy. Have a small container for the toiletries you leave on the shelves.

Kitchen and Dining Area:

1. Keep the kitchen tent free of unpackaged food materials and crumbs as much as possible--flies are a problem.
2. No children under 12 in the kitchen tent--period.
3. If you get something dirty, wash it then. Others may need it later.
4. If you use something, put it back where you found it.
5. Dirty water and cooler water should be thrown in the drainage ditch only.
6. Remove personal dishes and other items from the area as soon as possible. Camp dishes should be stacked in the appropriate area.
7. Personal coolers and other items are to be kept in your tent.
8. If you want to use the kitchen tent for personal cooking, you must make arrangements with Roz in advance and plan to kick in money for propane.
9. Personal items left in group areas overnight were obviously intended to be gifts for the head of the household. Begging and/or bribes will be required if Roz finds them before you do.
10. Fire extinguishers will be in camp. Familiarize yourself with their location and the Pennsic fire safety rules.
11. Only candles that are completely enclosed or are in a fully surrounded container will be allowed on the dining tables. Oil lamps are preferable. The dining tent over head lamps will only be lit if there is no wind.

Things to Bring

1. Good walking shoes--period if you can manage it. Also insoles and foot powder.
2. First aid kit with lots of band-aids.
3. Safety pins.
4. Large zip-lock bags.
5. Waterproof sunscreen.
6. A period looking chair.
7. Personal feast gear and cooler.
8. Biodegradable soap and shampoo.
9. Garb for all possible weather (including waterproof boots if you have them).
10. A change of mundane clothes in a zip-lock bag that stays in your car.
11. A sun hat.
12. Citronella fuel for personal tiki torches.
13. Citronella candles, insect repellent, flypaper, and a flyswatter.
14. Camera and film.
15. Money
16. Personal medications, contact solution, vitamins, etc.
17. Broom.
18. A folding camp stool (for taking to court, etc.).
19. At least 2 towels.
20. Medicated talc and bike shorts if you are subject to chafing.

Other Suggestions for New Campers

1. Bring a small project to work on during the times that you will want to hang around camp soaking your sore feet, resting after battle, or when it’s just too damn hot or cold to go anywhere.
2. Bring an axe if you like to help with fire starting, we always need extras.
3. Bring a garden spade to entrench your tent. If it rains you’ll be glad you did.
4. Plan on a way to raise your bed off the ground.
5. Bring musical instruments--there is always a place to play, and musicians are universally welcome at Pennsic.
6. Don’t bring a lot of food. There is an excellent supermarket very close to the site. The Coopers (they own the site) also have a small store on site that sells ice, drinking water, snack foods, soft drinks, and even fresh vegetables.
7. Don’t bring purchased beer. Beer in PA is untaxed, i.e. much cheaper that it is in most southern states. Best buy on beer is at Beer 4 Less in New Castle.
8. If you have to do laundry, there is a small laundry on site with long waits. There is a large laundry near the supermarket off site with shorter waits. Either way, plan on half a day for 3 loads.

Directions to Cooper’s Lake Campground and Encampment

From points South:

1. Take I-40 East to the I-81 turn-off.
2. Take I-81 North to Wytheville, VA.
3. In Wytheville, get on I-77 North, exit #72. This is the West Virginia turnpike. Once you enter West Virginia, it is a toll road and will cost you about $6.00 to travel the full distance.
4. In Charleston, WV, I-77 ends. Take I-79 North.
5. You will stay on I-79 all the way to the site. Do not take I-279 through Pittsburgh! This is not a by-pass. It goes through the heart of the city, through a tunnel, and has horrible traffic all the time.
6. Exit at the New Castle/Butler exit, #99--about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh.
7. Turn left. Cooper’s Lake is about 1/2 mile on your right.
8. Follow the road to the site. Pay the troll.

From all points:     (See Map)

9. From the troll booth: Go straight until the road Ts at the edge of the camp (you will be looking at a highway directly in front of you.) Turn right.
10. Stay on this road. It winds around and eventually goes down a steep hill. At the bottom of the hill, bear left. We will be on the right side of the road in area E24 on your Pennsic maps. This is the area known as the "bog." Look for banners, the House Wild Rose sign on the gate, and familiar tents.

Directions to Other Locations in the Area

New Castle: Leave the site the way you came in. When you get to the main road (US 422), turn right. Stay on this road into New Castle. The Giant Eagle supermarket will be on the left. The laundromat is about a block further on in a strip mall on the left. To get to Beer 4 Less, stay on Business 422. It winds around through town, with a few strange intersections, so watch the signs carefully. Eventually you will come to a T intersection with a traffic light. There will be a mall directly in front of you. Go into the mall parking lot. The store is in the back on your left. If you take the 422 by-pass just before you enter New Castle, the first exit has a K-mart, Trader Horn, and a liquor store as well as fast food places. The Poland exit has a Wal-Mart and a Staples with UPS mailing.

Butler: Leave the site the way you came in. When you get to the main highway (US 422), turn left. About 15 miles up the road there will be the Butler exit to your right. To your left is a big shopping mall with fast food restaurants and huge supermarket. To your right is downtown Butler.

Wal-Mart, Liquor Store, Lowe's, and Giant Eagle Supermarket: Go to the main road (US 422). Turn left towards Butler. Go to the Lyndora exit and exit right. Turn right. There will be a large mall with many stores in front of you. Super Wal-Mart is a left turn.
