Cross Country Ski Trip to Mills Lake

Saturday, March 8, 2003

Our goal for today is Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. We traveled counter clockwise and badly missed the trail on the way back. The dashed line is where we should have gone. Our actual track was far more difficult than it should have been because instead of traversing gently down the slope, we ended up going almost straight down. Ouch. That's what happens when you trust that the trail was broken by someone who knew where it was supposed to go.

The cast of characters: Greg, Haresh, Kelly and joining our outings for the first time: Richard.

We encountered this tree on a ridge shortly before reaching the lake. The tree has stood on a ridge top for many years and is showing the ravages of the weather here.

Looking toward Longs Peak across Mills Lake. We crossed this lake and stopped for lunch just short of Jewel Lake.

Lunch time. Greg took the picture so that I could get in the shot for once. We stopped in a clearing just a little off the lake. Amazingly there was little wind and much sun. It was almost hot.

A crescent moon over the ridge above our lunch site.

Greg Took an unplanned short cut. It's unbelievable how hard it is to climb back to the trail when you're mired in waist deep snow.
