Courage & Turnstone Qualify for Varsity NJWBT

By Mike Bauler, Courage Center

This past weekend officially kicked off the start to the 2007-2008 Junior Division. The Courage Center of Minneapolis, MN hosted the Northern Regional which hosted twenty junior teams that played over 60 games in two days.

Day one’s games were pool play which showcased the top four place finishing teams from last years NJWBT. Upsets were a plenty on Saturday when last years champions the Wheelin’ Wizards were upended by the Bennett Blazers by a score of 52-47. However, the Wizards would get revenge in the 3rd place game where they topped the Blazers 50-33. This was the Wizards first regular season loss in over two years.

In the most exciting game of day one the Courage Jr. Rolling Timberwolves were in a seesaw battle against the Turnstone Flyers. In the end the Timberwolves were able to outlast the Flyers by a score of 60-49.

On day two the semi-finals and championship games would take place. In a much anticipated showdown the Courage Jr. Rolling Timberwolves would face off against the Wheelin’ Wizards. The T-Wolves had not defeated the Wizards in over two years and were excited for the tip-off. The Wizards came out strong, but were unable to keep up with the inside threats of Connor Downes and Kyle Timmerman who combined for 44 points in the paint. The T-Wolves would pull away early and defeat their conference foes by a score of 61-32. In the other semi-final game we witnessed the Turnstone Flyers facing off against the Bennett Blazers. The game would be tight going into half time with the higher seeded Blazers trailing by nine going into the half. The Flyers would continue their momentum in the second half and put away the Blazers early and go on to win by a score of 73-46. The Flyers were lead by Kyle Killworth and Jared Arambula who combined for 46 points.

With the semi-finals in the books it would showcase a preliminary round rematch between the Turnstone Flyers and the Courage Jr. Rolling Timberwolves. Similar to their first match this game would be one of the most exciting of the weekend. The Wolves were able to pull ahead by ten points midway through the first half, but the flyers would mount a comeback and take a one point lead with three minutes left in the half. The Wolves would then put on a run of their own to go into halftime with a 27-23 lead. In the second half both teams would come out strong, but in the end it was the Flyers inability to stop big man Connor Downes and the Wolves up-tempo defense that would lead to the Flyers fate. In the end the Jr. Rolling Timberwolves would be victorious and cruise to the championship with a 52-40 win. The Timberwolves entered the weekend ranked 3rd in the country and would be the only team leaving with an undefeated record. Jared Arambula led all scorers in the Championship game with 22 points with Downes finishing right behind him with 17.
