Letter of recommendation for whom, that may be concern.
Dear Sir/Madam
We have been starting to know about your firm from Dr.Vladimir Sevastianov,
since 1998, after his work with Zegrahm Expedition at the North Pacific (Japan, Kuril Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska).
My friends from Finland, Norway and Latvia always ask him about new trips and
going to join its in some days. Hopefully in near future.
As for me personally, I can say, that I know Dr. Vladimir Sevostianov for more
then 25 years. Actually, we work together at the Russian Far East in different
kind of biological expeditions.
Of course, for us, will be nice to meet and travel with him again, because I
know him like high quality biologist and great person. Father more,
he is very helpful towards to the people and soon they pass their sympathies to him
back.
He knows the area of your travels very well. Also he has a lot of useful contacts
with people, who still live up there.
Also I can add. that he is obviously highly motivated, team player, able to adapt
and learn rapidly, writer, singer and player on the guitar.
His video and slides very interesting for the people all around the World!
So, my friends and I, looking forward to meet him at your expeditions in the
summer 2003.
Yours faithfully,
Dr. Nick Liskins , Riga, Latvia, Department of Nature Control

Dear Sir/Madam,
Please let me convey to you how much Dr. Vladimir Sevostianov added to
the enjoyment my wife and I experienced in June and July, 2001 on there
"Fire and Ice" cruise starting at Kamchatka and traversing the Commander
and Aleutian Islands. Dr Sevostianov is extremely knowledgeable of the
ecology of the territory, and had the ability to pass this information
(at least as much as we could absorb) on to the passengers in a pleasant
and instructive manner. For the excursions to the islands, he is also
expert in operating equipment (proper wearing apparel, travel in
inflatable boats etc). Aboard ship, he instructed us all with lectures as
well as entertained the entire company with his songs and poems. I think
you would be very fortunate to have him as part of your cruise personnel.
Sincerely,
Myles and Joanne Butner

We recommend Dr.Vladimir Sevostianov as an effective tour guide for any tour,
especially tours in the North Pacific, Bering Sea, and related areas. He has long
experience in the Russian Far East with special knowledge and experience from his
studies of sea mammals. We experienced expedition cruising with his expert
assistance in the Aleutians, Commander Islands, Kuriles, and Kamchatka Penninsula.
Vladimir ably conveyed his first hand knowledge of those areas and their human and
wild life populations with contagious enthusiasm. He entertained us as well by playing
his guitar and singing his own compositions as well as Russian folk tunes.
Vladimir's human understanding, trainig and experience in the world of nature as
well as his deep desire to help others enjoy expedition touring commend him for
your employment. These qualities and his extensive travel experience would make
him a significant asset in Southern Hemispere expeditions as well.

THE INCREDIBLE VOYAGE OF ELEPHANT SEAL # H-502
The day I learned that I had played "matchmaker" between Elephant seal #H-502, the Russian marine biologist Genia Mamaev and colleagues who discovered him in August 2001 on Medniy Island, one of the Commander Islands off the Kamchatka peninsula, and the staff of The Marine Mammal Center in San Luis Obispo, was one of the most thrilling and rewarding of my life. It is a success story that has its beginnings in the Summer of 1997 during a fantastic sea voyage along part of the Ring of Fire of the Pacific, starting in Petropavlovsk. On board the ship were several outstanding naturalists, all well-known in their respective fields, including marine biologist Vladimir Sevostianov. Thanks to his intimate knowledge of the region and his local contacts, we spent several days exploring some of the Commander Islands, including Medniy. The area where the intrepid "seafarer" was first sighted is a long, narrow, rocky beach under high cliffs that provide ideal nesting habitat for puffins and other pelagic birds.
According to Dr. Sevostianov and colleagues, he always selected a place on the beach, close to a colony of sea lions. The juvenile male and female sea lions were scared of him and always tried to keep a distance. The mature females tried to push him away by displaying aggressively. The male sea lions, between 4 and 5 years old, also behaved aggressively, but he confronted them with equal aggressiveness. In the water, however, this aggressiveness was replaced by playful behavior. The fur seals, especially the young one's, were scared of him and preferred to keep a distance of about 15 to 30 ft. But when approached by the Russian scientists, he showed no fear, contrary to the sea lions and fur seals. He remained very calm and sometimes allowed them to touch him by hand. The pink plastic tag was found on his hind right flipper.
Eager to trace the route he had followed and, possibly, the source of the tag, Dr. Sevostianov contacted me by email, knowing of my love and interest in marine mammals. He asked whether I would have any suggestions as to organizations or institutions on the West Coast of the U.S. that could help him put the pieces of the puzzle together. Without hesitation, the first institution that came to mind was The Marine Mammal Center, and I immediately dialed its number. I was connected to the office of Susan Fenn and, after excitedly describing to her the reason for my call, she gave me the telephone numbers of the Center's different offices along the West Coast. This information was conveyed immediately via email to Dr. Sevostianov. Several days went by without hearing from him but then, EUREKA! An email informing me that the intrepid voyager had been identified by Shelbi Stoudts of the San Luis Obispo office. According to her, he had been found, rescued, rehabilitated and released in that area. I immediately called Susan to relate the extraordinary news and it was, at her suggestion, and with her encouragement, that I decided to write this report about a success story that speaks to the caring, love and determination of all the people who made the recovery of this special animal possible. Particularly at a time when our lives have been so

profoundly changed, it is especially gratifying to know that so many caring individuals are fighting to keep our world as whole as possible.

Letter of recommendation for
Dr. Vladimir Sevostianov 25. 07. 96.
Dr. Vladimir Sevostianov is the specialist in marine mammal biology, who has unique experience of work in extreme field condition on the wild coast and on sea. In 1976 after the graduation from higher education as biologist, Mr. Sevostianov moved to the Commander Islands ( Pacific Ocean ), where soon on his initiative a laboratory of marine mammals was organized. This laboratory was one of the few field research centers, where sea otters, seals, fur seals and sea lions where monitired the whole year around in order to study their behavior and ecology.
Being the head of this laboratory, Dr. Sevostianov published 47 scientific articles, over 100 pieces of popular information on the biology of the Commander Islands and the need for its protection.
Being a brilliant naturalist and popularizer, Dr. Sevostianov has contributed much to protection in Kamchatka Nature. He was one of initiators and active participant in organizing the Commander Nature Reserve, which was successfully completed in 1993.
I can recommend Dr. Sevostianov as a highly skilled researcher and initiative specialist in Nature conservation.
