CLASSROOM PROCEDURES FOR MR. HARRISON'S

ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY CLASSES

(Last updated 08/24/2008)

Welcome!

Welcome to Mr. Harrison's classroom. I've established the following procedures to ensure you get the most value out of our time together in class.

As Class Begins Each Day . . .

Upon entering the classroom, students will find a daily "Due Now" assignment posted on the whiteboard. Students will take their seats quietly and begin working on the assignment immediately. The "Due Now" may be collected during the period and graded as classwork.

A student arriving late to class will be referred to the vice-principal's office in accordance with school rules.

During Class

Requests to leave the room during class will be honored in accordance with school policy. Refer to the Student Handbook for details.

Excessive requests will be discussed offline with the student.

A student must request permission before leaving his or her seat to tend to such tasks as sharpening a pencil or fetching a tissue.

The teacher's desk and its contents are off limits to students.

Food and beverages are not allowed in the classroom.

At the conclusion of every class period, all students are to remain at their seats until dismissed by the teacher. The bell does not dismiss the students. The teacher does.

Class Notes

Every student is responsibile for maintaining a dated set of notes from classroom lectures, presentations, and whiteboard examples.

Every student is to maintain a 3-ring binder, with class notes and homework, in an organized fashion.

Expect an occasional, unannounced notebook or homework quiz.

Students requesting extra help before or after school must ensure their notebooks are up-to-date.

A student absent from class is responsible for obtaining notes from Mr. Harrison before or after school, or from a fellow student.

Grading

Marking period grades are calculated as follows:

Periods 2, 4, and 9:  50% - tests;  30% - quizzes;  20% - homework and classwork

Periods 1 and 7:      60% - tests;  25% - quizzes;  15% - homework and classwork

Tests and Quizzes

Tests will be announced on the whiteboard and on the classroom website at least two days in advance. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.

A student absent on the day of a test or quiz must arrange to take the test or quiz before or after school, or with an academic support teacher. Drop a note in Mr. Harrison's in-box, or see Mr. Harrison after school to set up an appointment. Failure to take the initiative to schedule the test or quiz within one week will result in a failing grade. It is the responsibility of the student to follow up on missing tests and quizzes.

Homework

Homework assignments are posted daily on the whiteboard. Students are responsibile for making a note of the assignment.

Homework assginments are also posted on the classroom website. Students absent from class should refer to the website for missed assignments.

Homework is checked on a random basis. (Random days and random problems.) If the homework assignment is missing or unacceptable on the random "homework check" day, the student will receive a zero for that homework assignment.

Missing or unacceptable homework may be submitted the following school day for half credit. If a student had been absent from class on the day prior to the homework check, that student will receive full credit for the missing assignment.

A homework check may also take the form of a homework quiz. In such cases the homework grade will not be adjusted on the day after the quiz.

Classwork

Classwork includes the daily "due now" problem, assigned classroom problems, and "type one" and "type two" writing assignments. Grades for some classwork assignments are combined with homework, while other assignments may be recognized through tickets which may be redeemed for boosts in quiz and test grades.

Progress Reports

From time to time, Mr. Harrison will provide a progress report displaying the student's marking-period grade at that point in time. It is the responsibility of the student to report any errors on the report immediately by placing a note Mr. Harrison's in-box.

Ticket Policy

Students have the opportunity to improve their grades by earning tickets for actions that deserve special recognition. Tickets may be earned, for example, by participating consistently in class, completing a challenging class exercise, or contributing towards a positive learning environment.

Students can contribute towards a positive learning environment, for example, by leaving constructive comments and suggestions in Mr. Harrison's in-box.

Tickets are distributed entirely at the discretion of Mr. Harrison.

Students redeem tickets to boost quiz and test grades. A ticket is worth one quiz point, and three tickets are worth one test point.

Tickets must be redeemed during the marking period in which they are earned. Tickets are not transferrable between students.

Honesty and Integrity

If cheating is suspected, the issue will be addressed in accordance with school policy.

Students are hereby notified in advance that, throughout the school year, some quizzes and tests are designed with multiple versions containing subtle differences in selected problems, to help ensure all students complete their work independently.

Students are expected to complete daily homework assignments without the help of other students.

Extra Help

Mr. Harrison is generally available after school every day, Monday through Friday, in room 307 for students who need extra help, or who wish to make up a quiz or test. He is also available every morning starting at 7 am, also in room 307.

Students requiring additional help should also consider the following options:

"Homework Help" in the media center after school.

Peer tutoring arranged through the Source.

The lunch hour math tutor in the math lab (next to the nurse's office.)
