Robert Ray Mitchell age 89 of Kennewick died Saturday, December 24, 2005, at his farm near Kennewick.
He was born November 14, 1916, on a farm in Bradshaw Township in York County, Nebraska, to Chester H. and Laura L. (Glasser) Mitchell.
Robert attended elementary school at District 15 and graduated from Bradshaw High School, both in York County, Nebraska.
On February 21st, 1942, he was married to Celia Alene Sterner at Bradshaw, NE.
She preceded him in death on March 19, 2005.
During World War II, he was a first lieutenant, bombardier and glider plane instructor with the Army Air Corps.
After World War II, he returned to the University of Nebraska and graduated with a BS in agricultural engineering.
He subsequently worked for the U.S. Department of State, was the West Coast regional representative of Noble Cultivators of Alberta, Canada, and a sales manager for the Agriform Company of Pasco for many years.
He then realized his dream of working overseas by training and accompanying Peace Corps volunteers as a technical advisor in India.
He then joined the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a technical expert in Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia before retiring in 1979 and returning to his beloved farm.
Robert was a member of the Finley Grange 414, FAO Association and the Lincoln Creek Cemetery Foundation.
Special recognitions include: Who's Who in the West and the International Biographical Dictionary.
Robert also had his private pilot's license for both plane and commercial gliders. He lived in Kennewick since 1949 except for 12 years overseas from 1968 to 1979.
He is survived by one son, Howard K. Mitchell and his wife, Candy of Lemont, IL; one daughter, Ruth A. Mitchell of Kankakee, IL; two granddaughters, Sonyia Marr of Bradley, IL, and Laura Mitchell of Lemont, IL; one brother, Harold of Waitsburg and one sister, Rosana Quaresma of Walla Walla. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held January, 2, 2006, at the Lincoln Creek Cemetery near York.
