SIX AT STEAMBOAT
June 20-27, 2009

Thanks to the Woodmont Academy's fund-raising auction, we were able to find another great vacation. Last year it was the southwest, this year the West with four friends. We headed to Steamboat Springs in late June and had a marvelous combination of altitude, food, adventure, western nonsense, food and side trips with food. These photographs are entirely incapable of capturing the full experience, of course, but we share what we can.

On the way to Steamboat Springs from Denver's airport, we kept looking for snow and it didn't take long to find it on the mountains. The scenery was breathtaking as was the altitude which found us talking in short, but many, sentences. We stopped at Tommyknockers, a cute restaurant in Idaho Springs, an old Mountain town off Rte. 40 and before long were in Steamboat itself. The slopes behind our condo can be seen at the far left of this photograph. This is distinctly a ski town!

One of the highlights of the trip happened early as we went to the Fish Creek Falls outside of Steamboat. The perfect setting, roaring accompaniment and air conditioning effect as we hiked down to the bottom was one of the best memories of the trip.

We got a taste for walking early on and the week allowed us plenty of exercise but the falls remains a top memory.

Another memorable highlight was the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. We got up early, as we did all week, and hastened up the road, hitting the gravel at the end and arriving--one hour before they opened. The nice guy at the gate told us it was fine so we had the place all to ourselves for an hour. The teepee is for changing clothes if you don't mind the fact that there's no flap on the front Lots of flora and fauna around as well.
