The Metric System Notes

The metric system is a decimal system of measurement scaled on multiples of 10.

LENGTH: the distance between two points.

Basic Unit: meter

VOLUME: the amount of space an object takes up.

Basic Units: liter or cubic meter

MASS: the amount of matter in an object.

Basic Unit: gram

TEMPERATURE: the measure of hotness or coldness.

Basic Unit: degrees Celsius

The basic units of length, volume and mass can be multiplied or divided by multiples of 10 to measure objects that are bigger or smaller.

To convert from one derived unit to the next in the metric system, simply move the decimal point however many “steps”over and in the same direction on the chart above.
