N Scale

Kato non PnP light board (Atlas and LifeLike GP20 similar).  I make two trace cuts between the pads that touch the frame and the LED and resistor solder points, as shown by red arrows.  With an hobby knife, I make two parallel cuts through the trace and then with the blade almost parallel to the pcb, a slice under the copper trace to completely remove the trace.

I solder the red and black wires to the pad on the PCB that connects to the frame.   Then solder the blue and white wires to the LED and resistor leads.  I cut off the fingers on the motor that make contact with the frame halves and solder the orange and gray wires to the motor brush caps and then add some kapon tape to insulate the motor brush caps form the frame.  The frame may need a little cutting with a moto-tool to make room for the wires.

Digitrax DZ121 installed in SD40.

Lenz LE077XF installed in SD45, no frame mod needed, the SD45 uses the same frame as SD40 but the shell carbody is much longer than SD40 so there is space between the frame and the rear of the shell.

Digitrax DN-145K in E8A, I installed two white LEDs, one for the mars and one for the headlight.  I used the headlight lens assembly from a F7 so each lens is lighted separately.  Note:  the Y shaped lens from the E8 works great to light both lights on the F7 (no separate mars though).

wpe3.jpg (1308 bytes)

Used this headlight lens (originally from the F7) in the E8 to get separate headlight and mars light with two LED's as shown above.

Used this headlight (originally from the E8) in the F7 to get both lights to illuminate with one LED.
