West Virginia

Bridge Day | Cornhole | Charleston Distance Run | Gauley River | New River

My wife has family in West Virginia so we travel down there at least once a year to visit, sit on the porch in a rocking chair and drink beer. It's very relaxing.

Bridge Day

New River Gorge
Bridge Day is held on the third Saturday in October every year in Fayette County, West Virginia. Hundreds of BASE (Buildings, Antennas, Spans, Earth) jumpers and nearly 200,000 spectators attend Bridge Day.

The New River Gorge Bridge, 876 feet tall and the world's second longest single arch bridge, serves as the launch point for six hours of safe, legal BASE jumps.

Cornhole

Cornhole
Cornhole, as weird as it sounds, is actually a game - not exclusive to West Virginia, but that's where we learned of is existence.

Charleston Distance Run

Charleston Distance Run
The Charleston Distance Run is a 15 mile road race through the city of Charleston. I run this as a warm up for Reach the Beach.

Gauley River Rafting

On our July 2005 New River rafting trip, we decided to come back for Gauley season in October and hit Bridge Day at the same time.

The Gauley is consistently ranking in the top 10 commercially run rivers in the world. The Upper Gauley has 5 class V rapids within the 13 mile stretch we ran.

October rafting is a little colder than the usual mid-summer trips we take, but to guarantee a good ride on the Gauley, you have to wait for the six week season in September and October. The air temp was a crisp 40 to start off and quickly warmed but maintained a cool breeze in the gorge. The water temp felt like bathwater (when compared to the air) at 63 degrees. This produced a eerie effect of steam rising off the river until the temperature evened out.

New River Rafting

On our July 2005 trip, we decided to do a little white water rafting. This is nothing new to us, we've been rafting before and Jen's been on these rivers when she was younger.

We did have a newbie in our group - Nikki - and she handled it quite swimmingly (pun intended).
