Project MK1.5

1988 3SGTE powered MKI MR2

What is a MK1.5? This is the designation given to a MKI MR2 (84-89) that has received a MKII (90-99) engine transplant. Kind of half way between the MKI and MKII hence the name MK1.5.So why do this engine swap? Well, for one, the only engine options available for the MKI MR2 were the 4AGE 1.6L NA engine producing 112 horsepower or the 4AGZE 1.6L supercharged engine producing 145 horsepower. While these are excellent engines that can be massaged for more power output they have their limits as far as the power to reliability ratio. The 2.0L 3SGTE turbocharged engine in the MKII MR2 turbo is rated at 200 horsepower stock and can easily and reliably run at 300 flywheel horsepower all day long using the stock Toyota electronics to run it. Power and reliability.
