Baseline Car Setup and Calculater

So, offbro and I did a tuning session with bodyrollin tonight and I have to say it was enlightening. He didn't just give us tunes for our car, he went through an entire summary of each stage of setting up a baseline tune for our cars, and then while doing laps at Mugello short he recommended specific adjustments based on telemetry that he reviewed with us. Anyone that wants to learn more about how to tune their cars should take the time to do one of these tuning sessions. Here are the notes from tonight's session:

  • Front and rear tire pressure should be at 32psi after 2-3 laps.
  • Set camber at 1.0 front/0.8 rear and start tuning from there.
  • Using telemetry, adjust camber until tire temps are even across tire surface.    Add negative camber if the outside of the tire is hot.  Add positive camber if the inside of the tire is hot.                                                  
  •  Set front and rear anti-roll bars at 20.
  • If your car understeers stiffen the rear or soften the front to your preference.
  • If your car oversteers stiffen the front or soften the rear to your preference.
  • bodyrollin's spring rate calculation for for all cars: (car weight)/10 Xs 2 = (total spring rate), then (total spring rate) Xs (car weight distribution) = (front springs), then (total spring rate) - (front springs) = (rear springs)
  • Set front and back ride height four clicks above bottom; raise lowest to the same level.
  • Swap bump damping & rebound damping settings.

Set diff at 60% accel/10% decel and make adjustments from there.

 Using these tips gave me a good baseline tune for my INGS RX-7, and I tuned the car to my driving style with some simple adjustments and a much better understanding of what I was doing and why. After just a few laps of Mugello Short I was in the mid-53s. Getting this info from bodyrollin just made getting into this tournament totally worth it, which it definitely was already.
